Default Spring Bear

Wow...has the weather up north been nice,+6 and it looks like it is going to stay for awhile. If this keeps up the bears will be up and around one month before the spring bear opener. Will this affect the quality of the fur come May long?

Bears do on occasion get up and venture around, then go back and den up. I've seen a bear in March.....and tracks to the den.

I wouldn't worry about this weather too much.....I can't remember a May that was poor for bear

No sense getting excited, till there's something for them to eat. Lot's of time.

Default Cancellation of the Ontario Spring Bear Hunt

Imagine living in Northern Ontario where the spring ban hunt remains prohibited. The sad truth is Ontario black bears are today becoming recognized for their “nuisance value”. Excess bears in growing numbers are invading northern communities, looking for food. I was living in Northern Ontario over 3 years ago, and learned that excess indiscriminately destroyed and wasted. I spoke with the MNR in Kirkland Lake and they had already shot 24 nuisance bears and New Liskeard (and surround Tri-Towns) lost 28 bears to MNR kills. The hardest part to watch was the young bears starving to death. There simply wasn't enough food that year and with the over population made matters worse. I witnessed these hungrey bears wandering around populated areas looking for easy food. Meanwhile a whole tourism industry has also been destroyed.

You are very fortunate that this is not your reality. It has been a hard thing to watch. I am glad to be back in Alberta.

Default bear

What makes you think that they are even denned? A bear will stay out and feed as long as they can. there is still plenty of food available for them. That being said, they won't come out of the den early, because they go in early.
