Default FFP or SFP for mainly coyote hunting?

Looking at getting a 4-16x50 vortex scope and trying to decide if I want FFP for the easiest ranging at all powers for quick shots. Or getting a SFP which takes a bit of time to calculate and also can only calculate the MOA on the maximum magnification. Chances are I don't think that I will even be using max magnification for coyotes because they will be closer and on max it will be hard to follow the target.

I also agree with the Vortex thought, how ever get your self a SFP scope minimum 16x, with a BDC reticle and a rangefinder. Coyotes are fast and your shot chances can be small. This will alow you to Range, Hold, and Pull.

why do you guys bash vortex so much, theres so many good reviews of them and barely any negative reviews, and most of the negative ones are because there was somthing wrong with the scope when they bought it.

Default sightron

I have SIII 6-24 LRMOA for my 338 lapua. But in your place I would take 10X or even 8x fixed power not zoom.
Then you don't need ffp plus faster aiming

Would FFP be better for my situation or can you do fine with SFP?

Default Ffp

Ffp if you going to use the scope for a range finding.
In sfp you could rangefinde in high zoom only-24X in my case (not only og course- but more convinient )

I find by the time you see the coyote there's a good chance they've seen you. I use a simple 3-9x40 Burris e1 and rarely go past 3x zoom. More often then not you have to be quick when getting a shot off. Doesn't mean there arent occasions you get a bit of time for a long range shot but, In my experience you don't need a long range scope. If I could buy the perfect scope for yotes. It he something like a 5x fixed power 50mm with some hash marks for quick ballistic hold overs

Another vote for low zoom.

Yup. I just find its to hard to track at a higher zoom. I rarely shoot that long of a distance anyways. 400 yards would be the max. And at 3x or 9x I'm just as likely to miss at that range as hit. More often then not at that range they are running anyways.

I am sure you going to use 223 or something else that doesn't have huge recoil.
Than just get what Bowie said. And it doesnt really matter what you get.
There is no limit to perfection (price). If you mentioned your rangefinder model we could convince you the best rangefinder for you-Vectronix Vector 23 for 24000$

In my experience hunting coyotes...

- if you can get within 300m of a coyote without them hearing/seeing/smelling you, good luck. They're either eating, or sleeping if you can get that close.

- when glassing the fields, I spot most around the 1000m mark. The closest I've stalked in is to about 500m, anything closer & I risk blowing my cover or getting winded.

- I hunt almost exclusively in farmers pastures, that are basically "flat" but have rolling "waves" which coyotes tend to travel. And like I said, 500m is about as close as I can get without spooking them.

All that said, I have a Nikon 3.5-14x50mm scope (excellent glass, BTW). And I still want more magnification, atleast 20x, for those times I wanna stretch the rifles legs past 500m.

Which is quite frequently now.

In this case we are looking at at least 1200$ scope

Range finding is the last thing I use ffp for. 1mil at 100yards is 1 mil at 1000 yrds on any magnification. 1 mil adjustment is 1 mil adjustment at any range on any magnification. There is a reason most military's use ffp for moving and changing targets and it's not ranging targets.
And my vortex pst adjusts just fine, turrets are true with positive clicks.... I like my sightron better but nothing wrong with vortex from my experience.

There's a reason why vortex has a good warranty...

I'd rather purchase a scope where I won't have to use the warranty.
