Default 270 WSM Velocities?

Curious for those that have actually chronographed their loads what kind of speed are you getting with a 140 grain bullet?

I am more about accuracy so never check my speed but I was a little surprised I was only getting 2900fps average when I checked it the other day.

Rifle has a 24 inch barrel.

Am I leaving too much speed potential on the table or should I be content?

Reason I am asking is I have a Scope with a cds dial and wondering if I should hold off and find a different load before ordering one based on my current load?

I was getting just under 3300fps with a 140gr bullet, but that was with a 28" barrel. I settled n a 130gr load producing just under 3400fps. I was using R-22.

My Tikka T3 is shooting LRAB 150s at 3000fps with RL19 and 215M primers.

Mine was clocking 3063 FPS with 59.0 gr of IMR 4831 out of a 24" barrel.

At 2900 fps you are not gaining anything over the old fashioned .270 Win. I'm sure you can find a load to use more potential of the WSM cartridge and keep your accuracy.

Are you sure you chrono was getting accurate readings? Maybe the lighting wasn't good.

I bought a 270wsm a few months ago and am disappointed with the velocities. I have only tried the 150 LRAB so far.
Reloader 22 62.5gr 2860fps
Imr 7828ssc 63gr 2924fps
H1000 67gr 2983
Retumbo 69gr 2940.
Some of these loads are over book max. Do not try in your rifle.

I am going to try the 145gr eldx with R26 and R19.

Less actually. 140's out of a 270 Win should be at 3000 fps. WSM between 100
and 150 faster.

I found that a max load out of my latest Nosler manual was 75fps slower in my rifle than in the manual. The Hodgdons max load was 3gr more , and that brought the velocity up to 100fps more than listed in either manual, but once again, my 1885 has a 28" barrel, which is about 4" more than the barrel length listed in the manuals.

Yes it sure shoots as above, Winchester 1885.
I worked up a load with H1000 powder settled at 66.5gr with 145gr ELD-X bullets, 5 shot average velocity at 3186fps.

I am getting around 3050-3100 f.s with 140 gr Barnes tsx, Accubond or Sierra GKHP.
24 inch barrel.
With RL 19 or Rl 17 a bit faster around 80 f.s, but accuracy might be a bit worse.

Not 140s but with Nosler ballistic silver tips 130gr I am using imr 4350 and average 3225 fps and still have a gr left until max load. I have a 24 inch barrel.

I can tell u i would rather be a 100fps slower in a rifle the is 1/2 MOA than have it open up groups just to get speed. You said you are using dials anyways, accuracy always trumps in my books.

I get 150 fps more then that with a 140 accubond from my 270 win. If that were my rifle I would be looking for a new load that gave me more velocity AND similar accuracy. IMO there's no point burning all that powder if your not getting the performance it should come with.

What load are you using?

Nope, I've tried RL19. Meh! I decided a while back to steer away from Aliant powders when there was a shortage. Stayed with IMR or Hodgdon as a result and likely won't go back to Aliant.

I have recently , but not enough to comment on result yet.
Rl19 usually was giving me top velocities from 130 to 160 gr bullets though.
Working on a 130tsx and 17rl loads now..

I have been using RL 17 for my .270 WSM for 8 years and love it, I am pushing 140 gr NAB @ 2.862” to produce 3327 fps @ 10 ft from muzzle consistently (chronied about 200 rounds) and have confirmed the velocity comparing drop at the range many times. I am shooting a Browning A Bolt II with aluminium pillars and bedded action and consistently shoot around .6” groups with some .25” groups at 100 yds over the years. It hits like a ton of bricks, is more than adequate for hunting and has dropped 5 deer over 500 yards with this combination, but a deer is a big target. Highly effective on coyotes also, although not exactly fur friendly. I have read that it is one of the most temperature affected powders and have noticed that in extreme cold weather -25 and colder the POI is different but have never chronied at those temps, I just reduce my effective range. Oh and I do have noticeable extractor marks from my .270 WSM at that load but nothing unsafe and it lets me know how many times I’ve fired my Norma brass. I thoroughly check each piece of brass before reloading and have had about 5 split necks in roughly 150 rounds of Norma and I threw out all of my Federal brass because it couldn’t be fired more than 3 times without splitting necks. Hope this helps, I would suggest starting quite a bit lighter for any load development as each rifle is different, this is near my safe limits and on occasion results in the bolt being a little stiff.

There may be better ways to keep track of how many times your brass has been fired than counting the extractor marks on your brass.

Hey guys thanks for all the replies.
The load is 58 grains of H4350 which is a Hodgdon max load, they state the velocity of 3087fps out of a 24" barrel.
I'm 99% sure my chrony is working as it also gave me a 2850 fps average with Nosler factory ammunition on a 300 WSM and 180 Accubond which s what I was expecting with a 23" and a stated on box 2900 fps velocity.

I was expecting the load to be at 3000 fps just in my experience with Hodgdon stated velocities. I was fine with that but with only getting 2900 fps I feel it is somewhat of a waste of the cartridges potential but am more concerned about accuracy in the long run.

I guess I will contemplate a new load and hold off on the cds dial as I have plenty of time to figure it out before next fall.

Thanks,
Mike

Anyone have much experience with H1000? I have a good bit of it and it looks to produce higher velocities.

I couldn’t get very good velocity out of my 270wsm and 130gr tax till I tried h1000. Now I’m getting 3350fps and zero pressure signs all out of a 22” barrel

I succeeded in getting 3300 fps and a bit with 130's in two different 270 WSM's ( different bullets and powders)(24" bbl)

Never saw the need for a heavier bullet.

Don't anyone chrono a 7 Rem mag. It'll make yer heads explode.

Factory 150's will get you 2950 fps + or - 25 fps.
Factory 175's will come out around 2700 fps + or - 25 fps.
24" bbl's.

Quite chasing numbers!

3400 fps with 130 grainers has worked well for me as well. 24 inch Benelli.
