Is it unsportsman like to shoot a bird on the water with a bow?
Going to try migratory with a bow this year, what are your thoughts?

I might be wrong, but I thought it was illegal to shoot waterfowl unless it was in the air.

Not trying to start a fight, but that doesn't make any sense?

In the water it's tougher to kill them sometimes because of the low profile and vitals lower to the water.
A lot of people find it less ethical on the water than when they are flying.
This is with shotgun of course.

Not "totally" legal? LOL Things are either legal or illegal Cat.
Nothing in the Regulations I could find prohibiting ground or water swatting. As mentioned earlier, how would you dispatch a cripple? With regard to bow hunting, hitting them on the water seems a much more humane practice than trying to hit them in the air, where the possibility of wounding is much higher... at least it seems that way to me, a non-bow hunter.
Wonder why you can use a bow or a shotgun but not a crossbow for migratory?

I looked as well, couldn't find anything. Maybe it was illegal years ago, not sure why I was under the impression that it was.

No, I don't believe it is. Quite challenging actually.

I was speaking strictly with the bow, I have tried shooting them out of the air with a bow but it's dang hard....both to do and hard on arrows.

A shot gun case attached to arrow shaft.
Fill open case with shot.
The shot keeps going as the arrow slows down.
This works better for grouse.

Yeh that's why I added in the shotgun part because a bow wouldn't have that issue.

On one hand if I was walking the east bank of the river with a shotgun and
swung and shot at ducks on or a acoss the water there could be hunters
in a duck blind on the other side the west side.
Mabybe not.
All that depends uppond how wide is the river in the early morning light.
I think the laws of ethics if not the laws of the land were writin' as to not
shoot ducks on the water was as much to make it safe to go duck hunting
as it was fair chase for the foul.
To call in a wild turkey is very much like to call in a duck or an elk.
There in lies the lure.

It's not illegal to shoot a bird that's not on the wing.
Some people don't think it's sporting and ethical however.

Yes it's illegal to shoot at big game while they are swimming
BIG GAME
It is unlawful to
2. discharge a weapon at a big game animal while it is swimming.
If it's just standing in the water then you can shoot it, but if it's drops recovery might be hard.

In the water and swimming are not the same.
I put my feet in the water on a hot day and sit in a lawn chair while fishing.
That is not swimming

Sept 1 openning
I used to do that with a shotgun, not on purpose, the ducks looked to be taking off. Much to my chagrin it turned out the birds were not fully fledged! I was very up set. This year I haven't pulled a trigger yet because mixed in with the flyers are ducks that can't get off the water yet.
I don't think you want to shoot ducks too young to fly either. If you want to shoot them in the air (decoying ducks would be O.K.) go for it.

Last time I checked migratory was not considered big game.
Just a thought if I cripple a bird and I in breech of the law to finish it off in the water..
Could be described as unethical but not illegal

I thought once upon a time you could not shoot birds on the water but its kind of cloudy in my head. Using a gun you cant shoot them with a single projectile I believe the regs state. Its like with the suplimental whitetail. I think you used to have to shoot a buck first before you could shoot a doe.

elemont2012 is about on Mars. comparing apples to pears and such.
It's pretty simple if you shoot and cripple a bird above the water it is
expected you will finish the bird off even if on the water.
And I as I know it shooting a crippled bird on the water is legal and expected.
And humane.

If I downed a bird I would want to finish it as soon as can be done.
As best I can weather on the water or on the land.
Bow or Gun makes no difference.
Anyone else who's raised there own chicken and have had to kill
them with there own hands knows exactly what I'm talking about.
The rest who don't know don't matter.
