Default Crawling Valley REPORT

Too bad there isn't a sticky for fishing reports on bodies of water. So until then, let me be the first to try.
Guys please keep it civil and report the fishing, water conditions, problems etc....
Thanks and good luck.

Late last week pre this rain; main Lake 61 degrees F, back bays 64 degrees F, water clarity was much better, about 8' visibility. Pike still quite active, slashing at stuff, they seemed to want splashing and top waterish things, small Pike tho. Many minnows (fry) in marina, folks catching some Pike, but all small > 70 cm's. Marina also had several dead suckers in it.

Wally's were very few, tried bouncing, slipping and jigs from 15 FOW to 8 FOW. They were passing thru on the sounder. Weeds are now about 6' high. Maybe we should have focused on shallower late in day, but wind increased every evening to very strong.

I found the fish in a cooperative mood on Friday afternoon/evening. Pike and walleye on cranks (flicker shad 5 and 6s at 12-15 feet) in the afternoon.

The evening walleye bite in the main lake was really steady, 20 foot contour, leeches seemed to outfish crawlers but not by a lot. Blue/silver beaded harnesses with a blue/silver baitfish blade. Nothing huge, but lots of 2-3 lb eyes.

Was out yesterday and fishing was fine.

The water visibility was clear 8'- 10'. The weeds are sure growing especially in and around the islands.

Caught 21 pike from 18" up to 30" and only one walleye; very windy.

Pretty much anything perch color, and the odd blue/silver/orange Rattling Rapala's.

One thing we noticed on nearly every pike we caught was the damage on the sides and backs of their bodies, even the 30" ones. I can't imagine the size of the big pike that inflicted those injuries on a 30" fish?

Good luck.

Most of the jacks I caught had the same wounds. I'm wondering if these are bird related wounds, there are a lot of Cormorants around.

I don't know but in my observations; all the flesh wounds appeared to be fresh as the exposed red flesh was very obvious.

I don't know how long a flesh wound takes to heal to a glazed over scar but there were only 3 boats on the lake.

Only saw one Cormorant and it was late in the day.

Hmmmmm, a head scratcher.....?

Anyway, still a good day.

Have not been out yet this year cause of some big time wiring problems in boat Anyhow last year found the same on a bunch of pike we had caught. Looked just like open wounds and fairly fresh (meat showing) These fish were mostly on the ones that were at least 3 lbs. Confused to say the least. Maybe some bigger hungry ones. We know they will attack each other when the hunger hits or just because they're in each others space

I noticed that too, we caught lots of pike in the 23 to 31 inch range and most had gouges. One had a pectoral fin basically chewed off, would love to see the fish that did that.
