Does it matter if there are any elk?

Sorry to say this, but there are practically no elk left in the Alberta mountains.

Seriously.

Population counts are So low F&W has reduced harvest to the bare minimum.

By all conservations means, the seasons should be closed, to everyone.

Or, F&W should get serious about those predators.

Elk in the Foothills and areas near Agriculture are holding on, for now.

All the 400 wmu's are what you are looking for. some have Quad access and are busier than others. Sounds like you are looking for the quieter option. Just pick one with no quad access study maps start hiking and get to know the area You will soon find the areas void of game and the areas with sign.
Enjoy!

The quiet ones he won't be able to "drive into" like he said. West of Rocky the 400 zones are mostly PLUZ, and very limited vehicle access. Some absolutely stunning country, but very few Elk.
Get a good pack. get in shape and come out and enjoy!

Default elk

All the 400 WMU's are beautiful mountain areas. A few years back had good elk numbers but wolves, cougar and grizz have been eating most of them. Just as already mentioned if no vehicle access will still have some elk. Most elk in Alberta now in foothill/ farm edges. Cow elk smart do not like wolves and like alfalfa, they throw strong healthy calves that bears do not eat for breakfast.
Actually we now have double the elk harvest we had in 60 to 80's when lots in mountains, saw nice herd of about 35 going out to trapline couple weeks back.

Moving from where?
Are you going to satisfy resident requirements or will you be hunting under the non resident tags?

As soon as you’ve got a place to live, and you are getting stuff like utility bills, you’re a resident(laxest requirements around)
