Question rusting guns

I seem to have a problem with my guns rusting when I leave them in a cabinet in the basement. The basement is just concrete and is undeveloped except for the furnace. I wonder if anyone else has this problem

I haven't had the problem.....

Is your house new? Perhaps some moisture still coming out of the wood and concrete? Do you have a humidifier on your furnace?

either way sounds like you have some moisture in your house.....this is good for living conditions IMO.....

I would look at ways to simply protect you guns....easiest thing that comes to mind is a nice light coating of oil on them....this should protect them form any rust build up.....your other option would to build a small room down there and seal it up enough to have some "climate" control...this would be what I would do in an unfinished basement.....if your a hand-loader...you could do a nice little room all set up just for you....there was a great thread with some examples a bit back.......

I had the same problem I just bought a dehumidifier and put it in the cabinet. Wholesale sells them for around $30. havent had a problem with rusting since.

are other metal things in your basement rusting? If not, sounds like you put away a wet gun.

Short of the dehumidifier idea, I guess throw in a few packets of that silica gell you get when you buy electronics

a friend of mine had the same problem, he tried everything and finally moved it upstairs to the spare room and no more rusting.

You can buy a whole big box of silica from the craft shops for drying flowers.
Put a tray of it in thee ggun cabinet and you should be fine.
I would check them regularly , howewver....

Silica is the way to go. I kept an open jar in my cabinet when we lived in Edson as it was quite humid there compared to Fort Mac.

I have to agree with the silica desi pack. I have about 60 of them that can be recharged. I keep about five of them in my safe at all times. I change them out about once a month and have never had a problem.

All ypu have to do is put that stuff in the microwave apparantly, and it will cook the moisture out of the silica!
That's waht it said on the side of the box , anyway!

A low watt lightbulb or a "goldenrod" type heater in the safe will cure the problem post haste.
