Draw Question- Antlerless Mule Deer
Hello members,
I am hoping you guys can help clarify a question I have regarding the draw vs general tag for mule deer. I've called AlbertaRelm twice and got 2 different answers and I have called Fish and Wildlife and got a completely different answer.
If I put in for draw code 14, Antlerless Mule Deer Special Licence Draw (Page21 in new book), and am successful at acquiring the tag for WMU304. Can I also purchase a general mule deer tag and hunt WMU304 during the Archery season?
Page 20 of the regulations indicates that a hunter can only obtain 1 of the first 2 licences:
Mule Deer
Antlered Mule Deer Special License.
It says nothing about Antlerless Mule Deer Special License.
Here were the responses I got:
Alberta Relm said I can't possess both tags.. But I can purchase the general tag and then if I don't harvest an animal during Archery I can go ahead and purchase the Special Antlerless Mule Deer tag
Fish and Wildlife said I can only possess one of those tags...
I'm confused!
The way I read it, I can possess both tags.
Can someone help clarify.

It's probably best to go with what Fish and Wildlife says......
and then re-read the regs. It's pretty obvious.
Maybe I need to re-read the regs
I'm going to get the popcorn ready.....

I've had both antlered and antlerless mulie in the same year, so I think you are right. However, my tags were different and didn't include a general tag.

You will notice a black square by archery for WMU 304 for antlered mule deer. THis indicates that a draw is required. There is no general mule deer tag for antlered mule deer for this zone.
You can purchase a general mule deer tag valid for does only which can be used during the archery season.
Mule Deer
Antlered
■ S1 - O24 ■ O25 - N30 300, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306, 308
Antlerless
S1 - O24 ■ O25 - N30 300, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306, 308

If it's a zone that has a general mule deer tag then you can have both.

You can possess an antlerless MD special license as well as a general MD tag. However, if you posess an antlered MD special license than you cannot purchase a general MD tag. you can have both an antlered and antlerless MD tag.

Okay... so consensus seems to be that both AlbertaRELM and F&W got it wrong?

Without hearing exactly what you asked both parties on the phone, I won't agree that both got it wrong. I have heard people ask questions in such a backward manner, that they confused the people they were asking, and I have also seen people misunderstand what they were being told. However, you can hold both a "mule deer" tag, and an "antlerless mule deer" tag.

Fair enough.
Follow up question. Can you fill both tags? Or if you fill the general tag in Archery season you must forfeit the special Antlerless draw?

You can legally fill any tag that you are legally issued.

Wouldn't the online system disallow you from purchasing a tag that you were not eligible to hold? Thinking if you purchased your draw tag then tried to get the general it wouldn't allow the general if the combo didn't work in the regs.
Then as mentioned if you could purchase both you would be entitled to harvest an animal for each tag held.

What WMU are you taking about?
You cannot hold more than one tag valid for an antlered mule deer.
You can hold one tag valid for an antlered mule deer and one tag valid for an antlerless mule deer at the same time in the same year.
You cannot however hold an antlered mule deer draw and a general mule deer tag at the same time in the same year.

WMU 304.
I'm not talking about Special Antlered Mule Deer tags.
Special Antlerless Mule Deer Tag and General Mule Deer tag.

Just letting you know the can and can't scenarios.
In 304 you could shoot an antlerless on a general tag with a bow during that season (no anterlered archery only season without draw exists) and an antlerless if successful on the draw.
