Oh my...

Search elk hunting in the hunting forum and search harvest reports at albertarelm. That's step one. The rest is for you to fill in.

Hate to say it but your not going to get a ton of advice where to find elk. Anyone that consistently shoots them does not share locations. I would say head north and west and you will find elk. Its going to take a lot of scouting but time put into the field will pay for itself with elk in the freezer. Good luck and happy hunting.

The best place ever is about 8 miles upstream from Mystery Lake on Zipperlip Creek. Hunting is best on the third day after the first full moon, following the seasons first killing frost.

Default Elk

In the woods. Poplar are good. And spruce. Sometimes pine. Then there's the times theyre in the willows. Muskeg bottoms can be good. And open ridge tops. Dirty North facing slopes and also the sunny south facing. River bottoms can be great or up in the alpine above tree line.

Only time I've had success up there is after applying "Estrus Doe" scent directly to my face like aftershave.

If you head west, and circumnavigate all the way around, you'll hit elk island just before returning home haha.

As for the estrus doe, I prefer using wolf scent... but just a splash on my boots aaaaand in my coffee. Gives me confidence.
Rubbing it on your face? Gross!

LMAO!!!! Sorry buds but this question ranks with elk hunters about the same if you asked a guy to share his wife with you. It aint gunna happen!!! Do some boots to ground research, work for it, and enjoy it!!! Anything worthwhile is worth working for. I will give you one tip though read everything you can at elk101.com.

Head too the hills my friend.

Get out there and start watching for tracks, bedding areas and places that Elk perfur too avoid humans.

The saying ghost of the forests is so true.
They are never where you think they are.
They put all humans too challange at times.
And this is what makes tracking them down fun.

Much like the word "hunt,,, or as I say harvest."
Going after all critters for "me" at least, is 99% scouting with 1% of luck getting it done.

The challenges we face like every person who goes after them is taking on the challanges of picking a area that Elk frequent,,, then learn the area gooder.

Stick too your findings as the tracks and bedding will let you know if they are in area.

Heard Elk travel distance,,, 20 or even up too 60 loop arounds. It "might" take them 2 or even 5 days too come threw again.

Pod Elk,,, this is small group of 3 too 7 "some times" stay put, but there is no set rules of the above if Elk are ghosts.

We wing it in a way, but at least we are trying too narrow the gap in the puzzles at our end.
Our success rate is low because we choose to harvest areas that are low in Elk numbers. "We think they are low, but in reality they are not."

The second reason is location. We don't travel from home too area past the 200 km mark, or the 100 mile ish one way.
It works for us since we want more time on the ground and less time getting there. LOL.

So, dig out your map, drop a pin, go see if the tracks and beds are in that area.

Remember my friend, don't share any info with friends or family as it "could" cause issues later on down the road. Trust only your self and your trusted Harvesting partner.

Good luck with your boots on the ground as it will improve your odds when the time comes.

Don at finding the tracks I once harvested years ago.
Ghosts are hard too find you know.

They really are like ghost. I haven't seen any while scouting yet this year. Well see what the cams say in a few weeks. If nothing I'll be moving them to another location. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to share a spot. I won't once I find them.

It sure is great lacing up the boots and hiking for hours. I scared up a little whitetail buck last week. He ended up walking closer to me cuz he wasn't sure what to make of me. Also had a bear leave me a pike of s#!t in the trail by where I had park the quad to let me know it was his territory. Lol I love being out there. You never know what will happen.

I have a question for the pros.

Do elk respond or reply to calls this time of year?

There on the move.
I stick with the Kows as the Bulls are soon too follow.

Yes Ghost they are here in our Americas.
Wyoming in 1980 estimated they support 11 too 16.000 bull Elk,,, out of population of 116.000.

The Bulls alone is all of Albertas Kow and Bull population back then...

I'm only "guessing", the numbers might be lower than this for our 2017 year.

But they are here as they can put the run on Wolves, Cats, and Grizzlys.

The word resilient comes too mind.

This group was a pod a few years ago.

Its has now turned into a heard.

This Bull waited along time too come out as the harvest season was under way

He really didn't want too, but he knew that if he didn't follow suit, he would loose out on his girlfriends.

At least he was under protection in a no harvest block, but even then they roam for food out side that area.

It could be 2 too 5 days before they looped around depending on what the heard would encounter on their travels.

They would normally hang out if not disturbed, but most likely the harvest had them changing game plan from day too day.

Ghost of the forest are wize that way.

Seem they are not where they are suppose to be, yet they show up when we least expect them too.

Its almost like they can feel us when we're standing on the ground.

I've had my best encounters alone, frozen still, and at distance. That sick sense in them is awesome.

Don

PS: The photo was from camera too cell phone,,, this is why its hard too view the photos.

I have some nice Colorado Elk heard photos just out side of Aspen... Now that is Elk heaven in that mountain range.

Utha East and Colorado West is some sweet areas too walk with the Giants.

The last few "ish" years have been interesting on the Elk tracking and scouting missions in pre archery season.

The 2 rutts are sometimes ahead or behind depending on factors that we see happen from year to year.

I'm a picture taker of these ghosts more so than hunter / harvester gather, so getting in there is a bit more relaxing a-possed too bringing them home.

Any-who,,, I like too be in the area where the pre rutt is happening, that way I can judge how skidd-ish they are threw the night and day. They are wize too me I'm sure, but that's the way it goes.

I don't bring my Harvesting partner in till the second rutt as he's not archery friendly, LOL

I've been scouting for 15 years with nill for harvest as I might take on the challange once more if it works out that way.

Harvesting or hunting is different in my mind than others.
Just being out there in the mix is a lucky adventure in life.
I don't need the extra work, so taking in the wilds is good enough for me now days.

That way I get too relax the days, weeks and months away.

Nothing is in a hurry unless it does not fit in!
Nature's critters know this as they remind us of this from time too time.

Don at sharing what I don't know about nothing. Ha
