I believe that the grouse season around Calgary opens on September 15 but some areas open for waterfowl on Sept 1.

You are hunting with a Griffon? My partner has a young griffon (1 year) that he is attempting to train but the dog is a handfull. Any suggestions?

Richard

Default Early grouse

I thought I read there was early areas opening just northwest of calgary .

If your buddys initials are CS than I have his dogs brother , and he has

the same synpathies I offer myself on a daily basis ...,

The reason you dont see a lot of these Griffons around , is that they

are EXTREMELY difficult to train ( compared to a lab, brit , or the softer

spaniels ) A GSP is a walk in the park compared to the WPG.

The ability to focus is a very small number ... - 0 or less.

You always have to bear in mind the two most important rules

in upland hunting .... 1... Always find the truck and 2.... Dont

shoot the dog *

* Unless you meant to ....

Both upland and migratory seasons start Sept 1 in several different WMUs around Calgary. If you've lost your regs then check out http://www.albertaoutdoorsmen.ca/huntingregs/ for more info on locations, etc.

Or maybe because it is a rare breed?

Ray Sharps is open Oct 1st down here if you want to bring griff down we will be hitting huns on the 15th of spetember as well if you want to partake.

My two Griffons didn't give me much of a problem, in fact, they told me they liked the training. Hunting stock, hunting bred, and like Ryan says often enough, a versitile dog is born and bred to hunt...good training helps along the way.
Winch, I'm going to pass on the grouse but my Griff's will be out snaggen duck and geese for us next Saturday, and within a week or so after that they'll be sniffen out huns. Hope to see you out there somewhere this year...I kinda know what your dog looks like.

My griff blossomed in his third year out. I'm no bird dog trainer and just kept bringing him to the field, last years grouse numbers let him get into lots of birds and whoa did the rest. I enjoyed lots of solid points last year including a few with a vibrating dog solid with a bird two feet in front of him. Best house dog I've ever had and great dog for working in the brush. Good luck with yours.
