I have a 270WSM also, but the 340 is a far superior firearm.

so I breezed through this thread and this is what I can figure. I have shot both and now own the WSM, I love it and it knocks everything down. But here is what I know.

Is the WSM faster? yes
is the wsm flatter? yes
is ammo a lot more $? yes
Will a wsm kill better? Both will kill just fine if a proper shot is taken.
Are there some out there that get far to defensive or mad about ammo? yup, thats for sure.

my only regret is that I don't reload, and as such at $60/box for ammo this year, my practicing has been limited. My main reason for buying the WSM is that i wanted something with more punch than the 270win but nothing that is overpowering and will develope a flinch. I would classify myself as an amateur marksmen but with that gun I am getting groups under 1 inch at 100 yards. I can respect that. My gun is a Tikka T3 hunter, my preffered ammo is the remington accutips.

It's only jealousy if you couldn't have one for some reason.I actually owned two Mark Vs and sold them because I was disappointed with them.I now own several rifles that cost just as much or more, and I will not own another Mark V.If you choose to own a Mark V,good for you,but the fact that I won't own one, doesn't make me jealous of you.

Default 270 or 270wsm

The down side to short fat cases is they dump the powder hot and quick onto the troat where as the 06 cases cool the fire before they hit the throat with the long neck, thats why barrels with 06 size cases last so long.

So according to your theory,he 30-06 would have longer barrel life than the 308win?

How about the 7mmRUM having longer barrel life than the 7mmWSM?

308 and 30-06 have the same diamitor case with less powder in the 308.

In fairness the comment is no more rediculous than "I shoot a WSM cause it's modern".

So what, according to your theory,a longer case results in a cooler throat which results in increased barrel life. The 30-06 has a longer case,so according to your theory, the throat should be cooler, which would increase the barrel life.

If you want to use the powder capacity as an excuse,it punches a big hole in your theory, since the WSM case holds more powder than the 30-06 case. That would make your example totally meaningless.
