Default How about a car that doesn't need re-fueling for 100 years?

How about a thorium powered car? Just 8 grams of fuel is good for 100 years.

Wouldn't have any trouble seeing them in the dark. May be good for the lead mining industry.
Another perspective on it;

Whoever comes up with the 'fuel cell' that replaces the internal combustion engine is either going to be really rich really quick, or disappear with all records being erased.
Something new needs to be developed for sure.
I would take a Thorium 4x4

Nowhere do I see the word nuclear in the article, which thorium fission is, with all the downsides.

So now they have to build a car that will last 100 years.

Just did a little reading on this ........... pretty interesting. Apparently it is naturally occurring, more common than similar elements like uranium and is exactly what the article says it is ......... a long lasting energy source.

The technology is obviously in harnessing that energy.

Yup .......... someone's getting smoked by one of the exxon mobil hired hitmen.

The problem with a Thorium car, or a Fusion car, or a Fission car, is all the same. It heats water which turns a turbine which makes electricity ....

You see, we need to find a direct link to create power rather than just a heat source for making steam. That is the what is elusive.

This idea was floated around in the 1950's, applying submarine (steam turbine that is) technology to a car, a very heavy car.

Pretty sure Ford already makes a Fusion car., has been on the market for several years. What's all the hub-ub about?

Then it will simply be the EV1 sequel:

”You will get more radiation from one of those dental X-rays than this,”

Even dental x rays are cumulative and you're looking at daily exposure. Pipe dream on somebody's part.

Would the gov't have to put a GPS data-logger on it so they could charge sufficient taxes for road maintenance? I wonder that with the growing electric vehicle trend, those users should be paying for their fair share of road maintenance. Not that I find that car viable at all, but the user-pay factor for road maintenance should apply to any vehicles using them.

They can’t build a car that lasts five years without massive recalls and you think they can make one last 100 years. Maybe as a lawn ornament

As well, as you say that can't make a car that doesn't require recalls on simple mechanical/electrical components. Can you imagine getting the recall notice:

Your car has been recalled for a defect in the shielding for the radioactive materials. Please take it to you dealer for an immediate upgrade.
Also, make an appointment with your doctor to start your cancer treatments.

"Finely divided thorium metal can exhibit pyrophoricity, spontaneously igniting in air"

Natural thorium decays very slowly compared to many other radioactive materials, and the emitted alpha radiation cannot penetrate human skin. As a result, handling small amounts of thorium, such as those in gas mantles, is considered safe, although the use of such items may pose some risks.[152] Exposure to an aerosol of thorium, such as contaminated dust, can lead to increased risk of cancers of the lung, pancreas, and blood, as lungs and other internal organs can be penetrated by alpha radiation.[152] Exposure to thorium internally leads to increased risk of liver diseases.[153]

The decay products of 232Th include more dangerous radionuclides such as radium and radon. Although relatively little of those products are created as the result of the slow decay of thorium, a proper assessment of the radiological toxicity of 232Th must include the contribution of its daughters, some of which are dangerous gamma emitters,[154] and which are built up quickly following the initial decay of 232Th due to the absence of long-lived nuclides along the decay chain.[155] As the dangerous daughters of thorium have much lower melting points than thorium dioxide, they are volatilised every time the mantle is heated for use. In the first hour of use large fractions of the thorium daughters 224Ra, 228Ra, 212Pb, and 212Bi are released.[156]
I'd be more concerned about what would happen the first time the was a traffic collision. The article doesnt specify how much thorium is needed Your accident scene just became a hot zone but who knows how big. Fire fighters and ambulance personnel would require radiation suits.

Thorium has a half life of 14.05 BILLION years.

IF it ever came to market you would have to think there would be safeguards built in. A better question would be when are we going to see this car????
