Construction is still pretty strong in Calgary, and this method has worked for me when I was desperate...
Make up some basic cover letters with applicable history, and contact info, then get in/on car/bike and take them out to as many active work sites as you can (there are lots). If no one is around leave a letter, and take note of contractor/info and contact them. Many times someone is on site that you can talk to. Bring hard hat/safety boots in case.

Contact contractors that you find, and repeat regularly.

Good luck

Resi might be busy but I know the labourers Union is getting slow with commercial and industrial in the city. More guys looking than available on the job board.

That's a good idea actually. There are a few places nearby that have some construction work going on. Will give it a try. Thanks.

there is work but the rates have dropped a lot in resi. Now we get to work harder and longer to make less. General labour work will be in the 15 buck an hour range these days. Try excel homes

Apply again. They had a hiring freeze on for awhile but now they are actively looking for engineering empolyees now (track workers). The whole hiring process HR has set up is a joke but keep trying... Go to "cpr.ca" and look under "careers", then click on view all jobs, search through jobs and if you see sometime that interests you click on that job to apply..
Hope you have some luck finding a job.

Don't forget to say please and thank you. Manners count, especially when you're looking for an offer.

There is always work swamping for furniture movers, check in with the major warehouses, and look for the trucks at restaurants in the early AM. They usually stop at the same places every trip. Go in and introduce yourself. They pay cash .

Nope, I sure don't. I sincerely think you could improve your pitch though. Good luck on your search.

Give a concrete company like Consite, Marmot, or Pro Con a call. Those guys would be starting up right away. Doesn't hurt to walk in the office and hand in a resume. Good luck!
