You most likely will have the place all to your self...most will be with smoke poles...very few venture forth with bows...although one of the biggest moose taken here was with a bow...

How much snow in Wainwright now? I might throw the Longbow in with the smoke pole as well. We have deer tags and a cow moose.

My son and I are heading down there for our first time for the December 4-6 season. If i'm understanding correctly, there's an all archery area, even though its a rifle season. Is that correct?

No the annex is the east part of the base across the hwy. There is a smaller archery only area on the west side.

I can tell you it was a damn hard hunt we hiked well over 20km in the blowing freezing cold. With little luck I did happen to get a shot at the largest whitetail I'd ever seen in my life with my old open sight tc. The roads we very drifted in with 24" of snow in most places making hiking very tough one fellow hunter from Fort McMurray managed to get a 202" mule buck.

I wonder why shotguns are not allowed for the primitive weapons hunt (or are they?)? Most other primitive weapons seasons allow slug guns don't they?

I always wondered this as well. We posed the questions POINT BLANK (punny, I know) to both the area biologist out of Vermillion and the base bioloigist...neither could placate me. Both pointed me to this mysterious and faceless board from Edmonton
And about the bow..leave it at home. I remember one season there when a bow hunter connected with a whitetail. It was so rare of an occurence during a base hunt that it made the Wainwright paper.

That was probably in my weeky outdoor column...I usually post stats on the base hunt in my columns in different local papers here in the Mid West every year...as was mentuioned one of the biggest moose taken on base was with a bow...

Base follow up as of yesterday morning Dec 3/2014
As expected with the cold, deep snow and deer numbers down, the hunt would also be slow after the first three day primitive weapon, and first three day rifle hunt some numbers are down.
With first day of the third three day hunt underway deer totals are 93 deer harvested, with half of that count going to the primitive weapon hunt, mostly Mule deer harvested and Whitetail harvest down considerably.
There was only four elk harvested thus far, but sightings are way up by other hunters, the turn out of the successful elk draw hunters are down, most likely due to weather conditions also.
The big count is the moose with already 54 moose harvested, that’s equal to over half the number of deer harvested, with that there was some real nice bulls taken.
Even thou whitetail count is down several huge bucks were taken, I will keep a weekly tab on harvest counts and update, I predict low numbers other than the moose harvest.
