Default Opening Day Central AB

With April 1st falling on a Monday this year I made the point of taking some time off for opening day on some limited river fishing in central AB. I started off small. Used my 3 weight on a couple small Clearwater tribs. Water was skinny and it was tough finding unfrozen stretches but I found a couple pieces of water to fish. Started off with some fiesty brookies on a stonefly imitation.

I had some good luck casting the fly on the edge of the snow banks and then just jiggling it into the water and drifting it. On one little pool I was rewarded with this brown.

Day 2 brought us further west to bigger water. I had an audience while I was prepping to fish.

The river was running nice and clear however there was a hell of a wind barreling down through the mountains. I decided to leave the fly rod in the car and went with the spinning gear. After about 15 minutes of dredging a big pool I had a beautiful Bull follow my rattle trap up from the depths and nailed it right in front of me. I got her in after a serious bull dogging fight. She's my personal best to date for AB bulls.

After I released her I got another the next cast.

I lost one more big one which I never saw but it was a great outing and a great start to the new season.

Thumbs up

Good stuff, dude.
Beats the heck out of fishing through a hole in the ice, doesn't it?

Thanks guys. As an FYI we were in Jasper as well and the Athabasca looked just perfect to fish. I never had a chance to try it out as that portion of the trip was my wife's...dinner out, sight seeing, Ammolite jewelery...You know the old saying Happy wife = more days out fishing for husband!
