best foods for on the go?
Getting a bit bored of the usual, for those of you that are living out of a hotel for work, or only have access to a mini fridge and a microwave,
any suggestions for changing it up?
So far my usual when I don't have access to my hot plate is:
Microwave noodles, kraft dinner, hungry man dinners,
ritz cracker sandwiches, fruit snacks, spitz, granola bars
fruit cups and gum.
Not to mention powdered juice mixes.
These 12 hour shifts are starting to suck this week lol, 2 more to go!
Any suggestions and discussions are appreciated!

Pita or tortillas
Lunch meat
Lettuce
Cheese
Salsa
Eggs
Bacon http://l.yimg.com/ck/image/A7827/78274/300_78274.jpg
green peppers, tomato, green onions
You can make a variety of wraps or stuffed pitas
you can make scrambled eggs in the microwave
the bacon can be heated in a matter of seconds.

I was thinkin of starting a thread like this. Gets boring eating the same stuff every day at work, I think I'm starting to become a balogny sammich lol.
Get yourself a crock pot with a timer. Toss your ingredients in at night, set it to be done whenyou get back, left oovers can be the next days lunch.

Canned tuna or salmon Add extreme dill salad dressing then add Any veggies you like or have access to. Wrap in pita or tortilla or between bread. Best on road lunch I've ever made.
The extreme dill dip/salad dressing is what makes it. Also great for dipping fries in.

X2
Lived in a 10x10 cabin that had a wood stove, brought the BBQ (propane), Coleman stove and a cooler. Lived for a week at a time for a year, a little planning each week, ate like a king. Wish I would have thought of the crock pot idea.

what ever you do watch your salt intake. Those t.V. dinners are loaded with salt. Anything canned like beans and soups are also loaded with salt. Even the salt reduced cans still have alot of salt in them. Had a young neighbor who went for his medical. His blood pressure was extremely high. Doc found out he was having a t.v. dinner every day for lunch. He stopped T.V dinners and blood pressure went back to normal.

I would say get a habachi, and find a place to use it, parking lot or camp ground. Those little george forman grills can make a nice grilled cheese sandwich also, and are very portable.Ever look at a boarding house, or is this idea obsolete lol. Good luck and good eating.

*In the meat section of the grocers they have precooked beef roast or turkey or chicken in gravy that you just warm and resembles a home cooked meal. Very good flavours. At 5-8 bucks each, they are a good for 2 meals.
*Honey and peanut butter are good on crackers or bread. Keep with out refrigeration. Honey is excellent for nutrition and energy.
*Celery and carrots keep for a long time. Celery is great with cheese whiz or peanut butter.
*Canned 3 or 6 bean salad.
*Sardines or kippers
*dry meats like jerky, dry salami, fish.
*cheeses store pretty good.
*real fruit. fresh and dried, canned.
*buttermilk stores the longest.
So many ideas for nutritional foods.

The second last job I worked on while on the road was in Viking. We ended up finding a little mom and pop restaurant. We liked the food so much, we had the lady open up extra early for us and make us bagged lunches. She was a real treat. Everything was homemade. It was the kind of place where if you asked for a glass of milk, she'd bring you a 4l jug and leave it one the table. She made us roast and turkey suppers. The baged lunches were great too.
We spent two weeks there and between a crew of 8, spent over 5k for breakfast, lunch and super. She made tones of cash and fattened us up.
The job before that was Hagar subs and microwave chef crap.
Try finding an outfit like that and you got'er made!!!

When your home, make a good size pulled pork then freeze it in a bunch of freezer bags for individual usage. Good to have as bunwiches with coleslaw. Then good on nachos, pulled pork tacos ect... Just need to mic as needed.
