20' sounds lots high to me! I am building my ladder stands at 16' to the base.

Default Stand Heights.

Everyone has there own ideas but heres what ive learned in the last 5 years of bow hunting.

1-You do not want your stand so high that you get sky lined.
2-You want alot of good cover at your back.
3-You want to make sure the wind is right every time.
4-Spend the money to buy good camo,I use shawdow wear and love it,I shot
my bull elk at 11 yards on the ground and he never even knew i was there.
5-If i can get 25' with good cover at my back i always hang them at 25'.I feel
it just gives that little extra if the wind swirels.I really like to hang them at 25'
Everyone has there own ideas and reasons.Good luck to you on your upcoming season.

Hi Bill and welcome to the forum. I have found that strategic placement of my stand is much more important than height. I have several permanent stands that are only ten to twelve feet off the ground that consistently produce. Movement in the stand is what attracts attention and no amount of height will compensate for that.

Like already stated place your stands where you have some sort of back ground behind you from a deer’s eye view and not open sky. In a stand of evergreens is ideal but often half way up a hill works as well. In open country some camo netting etc can change your appearance enough and conceal some movement.

When I place my stands I like to get off the trails with some underbrush or dead falls directly below the stand so the deer don’t get too close. I also make note of where the sun will be during hunting situations.

Hope this helps,
MK

I'm always at least 20 feet up. I agree with what Bit Runner said and MK2750 - good information there.

Sometimes a stand location is early september is golden - but once the leaves fall you'll stick out like a sore thumb. I usually try to put stands in coniforous trees so leaves falling does not affect the location.

WIND WIND WIND -entry and exit routes - it all maters.
