Default Quad for Hunting?

I am not a rich guy and I am looking into getting a quad for hunting. Any suggestions on the minimum power I will need and where to look. A friend mentioned that there is a shop somewhere in Calgary that builds quads and they are reasonably priced. Problem is I have lost contact and have no idea what the place was called? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

D

I have allways been told a 400 is about the smallest you would want.

We have a 400 and a 450. I have seen them do some amazing things.

Check out last years models at Black foot. It worked out well for us.

i would get a 450-500. The extra bit of power is nice. I have a 700 grizz and it has more than needed but I ain't gonna downgrade

Default quad

My 500 with high low seems to be able to do anything you can ask it. A 500 in low gear will pull one heavy trailer yet it's still not to big

My dad drove once, I sat on the front rack (200 lbs) and we put the moose bulls head on the back rack and haul 1 km out in low range - that was like a 250 or 300 honda.

Get a quad with low range and 4x4

Check kijiji and the bargain finder - lots of deals during these economic trying times.

I bought a new 2008 Honda four-trax 420 in July last year. All said and done with winch I paid just under 6500, tax in. Seems a company had ordered a bunch and then backed on the deal last minute. I was Johnny-on-the-spot and got a good quad at a very good price. I took it moose hunting last fall and absolutely put it through hell, and she did just fine.

A 450 will yank a whole moose no problem. Using your quad with a winch and snatch block with a quad ramp you can even load em whole onto your pick up by yourself. Chainsaw comes in handy too.

A 400cc machine is all you will ever need for hunting. Seems every year the minimum requirement for a quad goes up 100cc.....

Soon they will just be called a pick-up truck.

Yeah! I'd go for the more power. But a 400 with LOW gear as well as aggressive tires ( 26" XTR's for 400, 27's for larger disp.) is more than sufficent. Try to stay with the main manufactures for parts and serv. etc. and don't forget the winch.

i have owned 350s 400s 450s and they all got the job done i now own a 700 grizzly wich is more than enough power but with the smaller quads when there got to be a lot of snow you will have trouble climbing cut lines. But i would go no smaller than a 400 it will get the job done
