Default .243 or 25-06 ???

Thinking of buying a new lightweight rifle in either 243 or 25-06. I have two 243 rifles in heavier platforms but I want a lightweight. I like the 243 but the 25-06 has always interested me although I've never owned one yet.

I'll be using it most likely just for plinking but no doubt it'll be on a few hunting trips as well, mostly just for deer and yotes, maybe an elk if one pops out. Ive had a 257wby before, never hunted with it though.

Right now I'm leaning towards the 25-06, my only reservation is that I've got all the reloading gear for a 243, but I'm only a set of dies and some lead away from being set up for the 25-06

Everyone has a 243. Be different from the rest and go for the quarterbore, I sure love mine.

243... better bullet dynamics et cetera... i played with a 25-06 and 250 savage and fails in the field ... however, 4 friends are very successful and satisfied with the 25-06 from moose on down but not moi

I'd go 25-06 and expand the brain a bit for new reloading. I like .243 as a round as well but I don't see why you need a third. I have two and I wouldn't get a 3rd .243 rifle but who knows you may find a better reason for the 243.

One of my 243's is an old push feed Model 70, the other was my son's savage axis before I bought him his tikka 270, so neither is a nice nimble rifle. I'm on an ultralight kick lately, like for the last 3yrs or so, so I want a light weight rifle in a light weight caliber. I told my wife it'll be for her.... So I'm allowed to buy another rifle, for her

x2 - you already have 243 exp so you get it and understand it... investigate a 6mm - 06 to jack it up

25-06 gets my vote, fast, flat, and kills great. Moose and Deer as well as coyotes have all being taken with mine. A buddy uses his on Elk as well as Black Bear

Default 243 vs 25-06

I have both. Hands down the 25-06 is flatter and more versatile. I have been amazed at how it kills deer.
I would not hesitate to put a stout 25 cal bullet into an elk. I have killed 2 with the 243, but don't recommend it...

My 25-06 has taken a few deer and a good bull moose....but no flys on the 243, that's all my dad shoots now.

I much prefer the 26/06 over the 243 and will choose it every time .

Last year I shot 2 deer with my 25-06, this year shot one with my 243. The 25-06 caused a lot more damage than the 243. I like the calibers equally though. For coyote I would lean towards 243.

What is a good bullet for the 25-06? I had great accuracy with the TSX bullets out of my 257wby but I'm not crazy about them for hunting. I prefer something that has more expansion personally.

I love the Nosler 115 Partition, or the 120 Partition. In mine they fly true and kill nice. Fast , flat, and kill well on the bigger stuff. Light game the 100 grain Partition

117 Hornady has done me well to

120 grain Hornady BTHP is what I used to use in the 25/06's I used for hunting
Great bullet .

I would not hesitate to shoot an elk with a 120 Partition out of a 25-06. Not for a second.

I have s friend who has been killing elk and moose for over 25 years with a Browning single shot in 25/06 using 120 Partitions .
He tried the Hornady 120's as well but went back to the Noslers

Well it looks like the overwhelming vote goes to the 25-06, think I'll be getting my second 1/4 bore, only this time it won't be a 10lb magnum.

I've got 4lbs of RL22 here so hopefully it'll like that powder!

R 22 should be a good powder for the 115 and 120 partitions. IMR 4831 will work with the 117 hornady. Both have done very well in my 25-06 's that I load for

243, unless you are willing to take the next step forward?

Remember your decision will not be wrong just another journey.

I'd go ahead and add the .25-06 if'n I was you! As you say, easy to set up to load for and something different than what you already have multiples rifles chambered for... Great choice in going with the quarter bore. I do not believe you'll be disappointed.
