Root Canal or Removal
I have a back molar on the bottom that is cracked and the nerve died and is infected. I still have all my teeth so the idea of an unmatched set is not sitting well but I had a root canal years ago and it wasn't my favorite thing ever. I am 47. Dentist has 3k to gain by suggesting root canal so his opinion involves much salt.

Good Cagary dentist
Where do you live, I shopped around hard a couple of months ago and got mind done for $1,650.00. A relatively young dentist but I was very impressed by his manner and work. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.

Rock. Figure skate. Guts. Just like Tom Hanks in Castaway. Make sure and do video. Post on Youtube. That's what a manly man would do.

Had two teeth done a couple weeks ago no big deal. Have another appointment to get one more root canal done in a few weeks, other than the needle for freezing I had no pain to speak of.

Every tooth you lose is more space for the others to start moving around in your mouth. Save the tooth.

Bite the bullet (pun intended). My Grandfather told me something that I tell my kids. You need your teeth for life. The big ones at the back are very important. Will it be uncomfortable? Of course. But the discomfort won't last long. At the most, three visits and you're done. Expensive? Yes. Again, you need 'em for life.
Take it from me, I had my left rear pulled ten years ago. Stupidest thing I've done. Now, I'm a right side chewer only. And those are wearing.
Do it man!

As others have said, save all the teeth you can! I have had numerous root canals/crowns and since the start of this year have had five teeth removed. You don't miss them until you don't have them!

keep the tooth, it will be much more painful and expensive for an implant later if you change your mind

I have just gone under major reconstruction to remove root canal treated teeth and would never consider having it done.
Despite the denials of traditional dentistry and the American Dental Association (ADA), root canals have consistently been linked to painful and potentially deadly diseases like heart disease, kidney disease, arthritis, neurological diseases like MS, ALS, and autoimmune conditions such as Lupus.
Sadly, there is also a strong cancer connection with root canals. In a five-year study of 300 breast cancer cases, Dr. Robert Jones found that 93% of women with breast cancer had root canals in the past, and German physician Dr. Josef Issels reported that 97% of his terminal cancer patients over a span of 40 years had undergone root canals.
Here is a link to one of dozens of articles questioning the common practice of root canals. It is a dentists most favorite cash cow, over used at best and in many people's opinion a very dangerous procedure. https://naturalandcosmeticdentistry....s-root-canals/

If you have the money go root canal. Like other posters have said - save every tooth (albeit dead) that you can.
Implants are expensive and dentures suck. Push that date as far into the future as possible.

Dentist don't get rich by pulling teeth .
As my old dentist told me , he looks at every tooth as a gold mine . As long as he can fill it , drill it , cap it or do a root canal etc etc hes making $$$$$. Once its pulled we there goes the gold mine .

No one dislikes dentists more than me. Oh I'm sure they're good people, but what they do for a living drives me up a wall.
Back in mid may developed a tooth ache, I thought to myself it will get better well 5 days later and no sleep for 3 I showed up and got in without an appointment. they cleaned up an old filling and did their work. I paid just over 900.00.
3 days later I am back and in more pain than ever. Walked in at opening time was put in a chair for a root canal. They credited me the 900.00 and charged me 750 for the root canal. The dentist froze me up solid, explained what was going to happen, propped my jaw open and went to work.
I watch Team Canada loose in the semi finals of the worlds while this was being done. Never felt a thing. It took about a week to feel normal. Going back for a crown in August.
I think I may have found a good dentist.

I have molars on my upper jaw that are too big for the space they're in, one ended up just falling apart, so I got it pulled; when its mate on the other side started acting up, I opted for a root canal. Not a month goes by where I don't regret not getting that one pulled...

Keep the tooth. Tooth with crown may last long. Implant installation is way more expensive (and painful) and may have some issues afterwards that may require more work and money.

I had an unfortunate ladder incident in September that resulted in me knocking out 3 front teeth and shearing off 2 others. Went the implant way. They pulled two additional teeth and installed 7 titanium implants to hold a one piece, porcelain (not actually porcelain, but some sort of fixable, newer polymer, bridge). Finally got the permanent one installed. I'm very happy, all things considered. Takes a bit of getting used to as you don't have the mouth feel you once had, but it works, I have a Hollywood smile and I'm 27k out of pocket minus the 10k insurance stepped up for!

Well the overwhelming consensus is to keep it. I may not make it to my Thursday appointment before I tear it out with pliers. I kid, I can't even eat and Tylenol and Advil taken together don't seem to help. Touching it with my tongue nearly brings me to tears. Best weight loss plan ever.

Have had tooth problems forever. Had a bad tooth ache(not that there is a good one) and figured enough was enough, time to get them out. Dentist convinced me that he good give me teeth that would be good for twenty years, so I agreed. Five root canals and who knows what else I was on my way. Five years later I have had three of the root canals pulled from getting infected. Done some research since and from what I can gather it is one of the worst things you can do. In my case it’s true. Bacteria traps are what they are. Hasn’t done much for my humor when I have to pay 375 bucks to watch them throw a 2000 dollar tooth in the garbage.

If the tooth is cracked then is no point saving it with a root canal treatment, it will break in the future unless a crown is placed on it. I'd talk to a specialist to see if an immediate implant would work for you, it doesn't cost much more than an RCT + crown.

Yep, it is the dirty little secret of the Dentistry world. To make it public knowledge could mean massive lawsuits in the States. I have not felt better in years since getting root canal teeth removed.
I was suffering with nasal congestion, extreme allergies and difficulty breathing. Dentists said I was crazy blaming the root canals. I finally got them removed and the Dentists was " Oh wow, that's not right. That should have showed up in your blood work"
Miraculously, I no longer need allergy medication (it was daily or couldn't work) I seldom get congested except when it is extremely dry (I use to never leave home with out a bottle of nasal spray) and my breathing has improved dramatically.
Another issue i suffered with was on again off again acid reflux and chest pain when I ate certain foods. Not surprisingly, that too has been linked to screwed up bacteria in one's mouth. Poor digestion and peptic ulcers are common among root canal sufferers. My stomach issues have almost completely vanished since getting them out.
I provided a link above but there have been lots of studies done. As long as lawyers exist not many are going to admit there is a big problem with root canals. If you search European studies on the subject, there is a lot of interesting info.
