Default 2.5-10 power or 1-6 power for 500 meter semi auto coyote gun

Im trying to pick a scope for my semi auto 308. Planning to use it for coyotes out to about 500 meters and general fun plinking.

Same glass quality.

2.5-10x44 power mRad retical scope

Vs

1-6x24 power mRad retical scope.

Anyone using 6 power scopes care to say what distance they are comfortable seeing things out to. I like the idea of the awesome field of view the 1 power offers for fast close shots, but i dont want to cripple my longer shot capability.

2.5-10 every time. I've got a 1-5 on one of my coyote rigs and while it's great for in close you really start to miss the extra power after about 300.

I have a 1-4 and I wouldn't take too many shots past 250. With a 308 a 2.5-10 would be my first choice if it were an XCR-M.

You both give about 60 yards per magnification... and both max out your limit to 250 to 300 yards. Do you guys think it is limited by magnification or 308 trajectory/drift/group size at that range... coyotes are smaller than deer. If you had higher power scopes on the same guns would your distance increase?

For me it's more just about magnification, for deliberate shots it's certainly possible to stretch it out further but in field situation it can become a bit difficult to judge hold over at the longer ranges. If you plan to dial up it may not be an issue for you. On the other hand I also run a 6.5-20 power optic for calling and I've never felt over powered.

Maybe look into a leupold CDS scope and get the cap dialled up for 500 - 600 meters

I prefer 4-12x40 or 4-16 on my coyote guns. On my AR I have a 2.5-10 x44 and it works nice on targets, just too bad I can’t use it on coyotes.

Default scope for coyote

I agree with the majority of the responses that the higher power scope should be used, especially for shots past the 300 yds/metres range..

I agree with 4-16x. They look pretty small at 500 yards and with 16x using a bipod you won't get the shakes.

I agree...and they make great gopher scoped in the off season as well....I like them so much I just ordered another three from my dealer. ......Sightrons with the HHR retcule are pretty reasonable and the glass is GREAT

Trades I would interested in:
- Sightron rifle scopes, 4.5x14x42mm or 4x16x42mm
especially! with the HHR reticle. (no duplex pls.)
- older 6x fixed scopes with fine X or target dot.

I'd look at Athlon Optics
