Default Can Anyone Identify This Antique?

A farmer friend of mine found this old action on the road after it was recently grated. There are no makers marks visible at all. All we know is its a breach action with a straight down bolt handle. The barrel has an internal diameter of 11/16" or 0.68" with no rifling. Barrel may have been poorly cut or broken off. Assuming its a shotgun of some sort but not going to rule out a large bore smooth barreled rifle ( if such a thing exists) due to the possible age. I'm guessing Cat may have owned one in the past.

Anyone got any ideas?

It's a gras 74/80, either the carbine or the musketoon (hard to tell in its current condition). Many of them were bored out to shotguns by the Belgians. Likely a sweet sixteen before the cancer got to it. Cool find.

Cool find! Looks like it needs to soak in diesel for awhile.

I think we have a winner, I found a link that says the 66-74/80 came with a v grove to use as the rear site so Im guessing this came off a 66. It also said it was common for them to be bored out to a 16 or 20 gauge.
Thanks for the info, you just won me a beer.

Yep, that tail's a little distinctive, isn't it. I did have to google quickly to recall which models had the turned down bolt though.

Just bead it and cerakote. Good as new!

Would make a cool conversation piece as a decoy weight- that looks like what it was used for anyway!!

Thinking someone turned that into an Obrez at one time.

If they did, they did a poor job of cutting the barrel. The cut is about 30 degrees off square and has a massive burr on the end where it looks like it was bent.

Dig a little deeper, you may find Al Capone!
