Default 17hmr recommendations.

Looking for input on the 17hmr. Would like to get a bolt action. What does everyone have and why? pros/cons?

Main use will be close range coyotes (100yards and under), gophers, and the odd chicken.

Thanks.

I bought a Savage 93r with a bull barrel.
Topped it with a 6x20x50.
Super accurate, shot a coyote at 80 yards and dropped it, let alone the number of gophers.
Only thing I found that I don't like about it is that wind is NOT your friend with this caliber.

Thanks. Any feeding or ejection issues with your Savage93? Was it picky about ammo in terms of accuracy?

I have a heavy barrel savage GLV, the action is crude, the trigger isn't great (pre accu trigger) but it shoots just as good as my CZ 452 LH. The CZ is probably only a couple hundred more $ but will retain it's value better.

I have the 93r too, only feeding issues were with aftermarket black 10rd magazines. I bought a new mag in stainless (all the store had) and no problems since. Weird. The stainless magazine seems more robust than the black.

Anyways, I love mine too, crazy accurate and it was under $200. I used about $150 in Candian Tire money so it only actually cost was equal to a case of beer to buy! 😛

Nope,
Shot hundreds of rounds, no issues with different brands.
Love the rifle.

Where did you get the magazine?

For the price, the Savages are hard to beat. I picked up a used one from Bashaw Sports with a (lower end) Bushnell scope for around $225.00 earlier this year and found it to be both reliable and very accurate. The 17 grain bullets definitely shot better than the 20 grain.

I did a range test with a CZ455 vs a Savage 93R17. The Savage was a heavy barrel and the CZ was a standard weight.
Comfort - CZ
Fit and Finish - CZ
Trigger - Draw
Accuracy - Savage
Price - Savage
Ease of finding spare mags - Savage
Feeding - CZ

This cant be said for all of them as I had a small sample group to test (2).

Thumbs up

Hi.

I own a Savage Arms Model 93 in .17HMR, and have had it for about a year now.

This rifle is used exclusively for "prairie dogs" of which it has taken hundreds.

Mine is the basic model and came with weaver mounts installed. I added a Tasco Varmint scope in 4-9X, a nice sling and bought extra mags. This model comes with one 5-round magazine. Spare mags are plentiful and a 10-round is available.

I plan on stripping the wood stock this winter and staining it a different color.

This rifle is very accurate with a bi-pod or rest. I shoot old shotgun hulls at 100 meters for practice.

I have encountered the odd feed issue, but, this problem is mag related. The mags are stamped steel and over time will flex allowing rounds to eject from mag's top. Tweak or replace old mags as needed.

I believe I paid less than $300 for this rifle when our dollar was closer to par. I am quite happy with it.

ditto, got a bipod and a 6-24x on mine and sometimes I tape quarters to a board at 50 yards for a target. Lost too much money doing that, going to have to switch to nickels

the heavy barrel, large scope, and bipod make it a pain in the *** walking gun though, it's more of a sit-down and blast very gopher-for 150 yards gun.

check out the CZ 455 Canadian edition as well, it's pretty neat.

I have a CZ 452 varmint in 17 HMR. I bedded the action and had the trigger turned down to a crisp 2lbs. I have never tested it on paper at distance but know it groups well at 50m. I use it for gophers and with decent conditions get about an 80% kill ratio out to 165m off a bipod.

I have had 3 savage 93r all 3 had problems with misfires with various brands of ammo even the expensive savage mako all stainless bull barrel. Accuracy was good on all of them though. I ended up selling all 3 and bought a CZ455 which is worth every penny.

I have approximately a thousand rounds down the barrel of my Savage 93. My firing pin strikes hard, but, I believe I have had 2-3 duds. These I would attribute to poor primers, not the rifle.

My favorite rounds are CCI (Varmint and TNT) followed by Hornady V-Max. I have never been able to score Winchester, Remington or Federal ammo in .17HMR.

Default cz455

Had two ,one cz452 and one cz455.

I had two types of ammo .

At 25, 50,and 100 yards the 455 had better groups.

I now only have the 455 in 17hmr.

No experience with any other makes.

In my case it was the rifle at fault. Took one to a gunsmith and had the spring replaced which helped a lot. In most cases I could take the so called dud and it would fire without any problems in my buddy's henry. The winchester ammo was by far the worst but all 3 would misfire with hornady and cci quite often

I have used my 453 varmint for 6 years and many thousands of rounds now and have never had a misfire or any kind of problem with it. This has been with many different types of ammunition and the groups are excellent with 17 and 20 but the 17 is the smaller group of the two.

Savage model 93 r17 here , heavy barrel . Shoots 17 gr Vmax the most accurately . Good on gophers out to 225 yds on a windless day and one coyote so far , close range wouldn't shoot out to 100 yds on them . Very few misfires in the last year since I bought it , but had 2 in a row out one box a week ago . Cycled it again and it fired , go figure .

Default .17 hmr is pin point accurate

Remember when purchasing a .17 hmr that you DO NOT have to spend big money on it, to have a pin point accurate rifle. I own a model 93 savage .17, and I will tape a bunch of pennies on a piece of cardboard and punch holes in them for days without missing. If you get a chance check out YouTube as to what this caliber can really do.

Another vote for the CZ 455 heavy barrel. Savages shoot well, and are cheap. Tho the overall fit and finish of the cz is imo worth the extra money. Nothing against Savage, basically comes down to what your looking for.

My CZ 452 American was quite accurate, and the fit and finish is far superior to the Savage. If you don't care about fit and finish, go Savage.
