Default Large magnum rifles

I own and enjoy shooting a variety of the big cals. 375 h&h,458 Lott,460wby,505 Gibbs. A lot of people don't understand enough about the big guns. They think if you shoot a deer or averaged sized game with say a 460 wby that you will blow them up and wreck all the meat. Just the opposite. A 500gr does less damage than a 150 gr out of a 7mm. Same size hole in and out. Results would be different I am sure if you were to shoot threw both shoulder blades.

x2 a lot of guys i work with had say a 300 win or whatever and they went with a smaller gun because of wayyy to much meat damage so I try to explain that its not the size of the gun its the lead you choose and where you hit. I shoot a 338-378 weatherby on everything and love it even for deer but especially moose and elk

I don't shoot magnums, even small magnums...........because I like to shoot. Easier on the shoulder and the pocket book.

And Repetitious Shooting Magnums can turn the Shooter's Brain into MUSH !

Evidence of that is easily recognized

I shot everything from gophers to moose effectively with a 270 for years mostly because in my mortgage years it was all I had. Somehow the fascination of shooting large heavy bullets has peaked my interest first it was 8mm then .338 -.358-.366-.375, I hope my shoulder holds out long enough to reach to .500

I have two friends who use a 375 H&H for everything.
The use of proper bullets and controllable recoil are key.
I've hunted with big cartridges when I was younger and possibly would still except for nerve damage and some shoulder issues.
What makes me laugh however are the guys that say you NEED to hunt with a magnum, that is just hilarious!

It's Totally true. A 375 is the bare minimum for deer and a 7mm rem mag is definatley the minimum for coyotes.

Ahh! Cat. we've all gone through that stage in our youth where a magnum of some sort was the bomb. At least I did. Then some of us change. I gotta say though that even though I now prefer the smaller and friendlier cartridges I would still hunt with a .375 H&H. For a large cartridge, it is quite tolerable. And it lends itself to loading down with lighter bullets and loads. Very versatile, I loaded mine with everything from 300gr right down to a 160gr Speer for WT deer. It did a superb job at both ends of the spectrum. Nowadays, I'm quite fascinated with 6.5mm stuff.

The .375 H&H is an obsolete smokepole and should be outlawed , someone is sure to take a shot at whitetail doe and under gunned , end up wounding it, and end up getting pummelled to death by the doe

Any REAL MagnumHead would settle for nothing less than the .375 Ruger ,

It's only a matter of days, maybe even hours before the last .375 Hurt&Holler will be recycled into the scrap heap and sent to Taiwan .

Most all of my rifles are chambered in a magnum of some sort. Not because I think they need to be, but because I want them to be. I have several that are non magnum as well. My go to hunting rifle is a Sako 995 in 270 Weatherby Magnum. It fits me well, I shoot it well and that's all that matters. I'm also a sucker for odd ball stuff, so I have a 7x61 Sharpe & Hart Magnum as well as 308 Norma Magnum and 300 H&H. Just because.

I read an article/ thread on Hunting forum from lower BC and they said the .375H&H was doomed to be forgotten,

Replaced by the NewImproved .375Rooger ( lmao)

Even 1 of their mods has one and calls it his King or Queen or something like that,,,,, although he admits he never killed anything with it in several years huntin,,,,

Anyway, zombies in Vancouver better beware the .375Rooger ,, hahaha

Nothing wrong with those big calibers, if you're up to shooting them, most people aren't and not willing to admit it.

True less meat damage on the game animal but lots of meat damage to the guy behind the rifle.
Never admit it though

Is that gatehouse? The 'new king'... He almost turned me off of the thing with all the new king talk. That being said, I want to build a 338 ruger. So, looking for a Remington 700 338 win mag to build it off of...

I may build myself a 375 ruger for myself, but I'm not fond of ruger rifles. So, I'll have to build one that I like at this time...

The 450 AI in the pic is made on a Brno 601 action ( originally 375H&H0 IIRC, it was built by Rachel's gun shop many years ago, ended up at Klondike Arms and languished there for a time.
Oldbadger hummed and hawwed, then it was GONE!
it turned back up the following year and this time he didn't waffle on it.
It now resides in my son's cabinet.
One of the nicest rifles I ever owned ( for a bolt gun, anyway) was a Winchester Super grade in 375 H&H, really nice shooting rifle.

X2, or put in the time to learn how to handle recoil.

Does anyone have experience with the 416 rem mag on moose elk and deer? This is one that has piqued my interest.

Cheers

One of my hunting guns is a 98 Mauser, 308 Norma magnum. Lots of power but I still have always wanted a 375H&H. Followed by a 300 H&H.

Putting the bullet in the right place should have the same effect as a 100KM /hour Ford. You'd sure want to be picky about the rifle. The meanest kicking SOB of a rifle I've ever shot was a CZ 550 in 416 Rigby. After the 2nd shot it wasn't fun anymore, and that was free hand. I can't imagine that bloody thing off a bench!
