Question Long Range .308 Winchester Coyote load?

Hi all.

Wondering if anyone has a potential load-out for a long range .308 Winchester cartridge with specific intent on being "fur friendly" on Coyote? Tall order, maybe...

Bullet recommendations with powder? I have lots of CFE223 powder in my inventory.

I own a .223 Remington, but, am interested in exploring >300 meters with my .308 Winchester.

With a 308 at those distances you likely wont be able to be keeping the bullet inside the yote like varmint bullets in your 223 so your best bet is a controled expantion hunting bullet.
Cant help much on the reloading end as im just starting to get loads for my 308. Imr 4895 is a great 308 powder if you have any.

About 46 grains of varget ( depending on the rifle and case) behind a Sierra 155 palma will be accurate.
You could try to find some Speer 125 TNT's, I messed with them a bit with 46.5 grains of H322 behind them.

I have some .308 handloads using TNT's that I put together about 7 years ago that I have yet to even fire, thanks for the reminder! I just found them last week while organizing.

That is one of the wickedest looking bullets out there!!
REAL big azzed hollow point !
The .264 TNT's (87 grains?) I used in my 6.5x55's worked very well, too.

You are going to have a lot of trouble keeping a 308 round inside a coyote at any range so I would try something that isn't likely to expand much. FMJs would work, so would Barnes 130 TSX or Nosler Partition. Any of these will give you as small as possible an exit hole. 46 grains of 4895 will get them moving at 3100 FPS so they shoot nice and flat and are fairly wind resistant. Work up to that load, don't start there.

I'm a big fan of sierras 165gr hpbt game king.

I've used them in my 30-06 bolt gun and my m14s and found them very accurate and they expand fairly reliably. They tend to leave loonie size exits on coyote and deer sized game.

If you think those are big hollow points check out the Barnes offering for .30-30!!

Yeah, but do you think a magnum primer would fit backwards in the tip?

Smile Another idea

If you reload, and I guess that you do, you get awesome performance with a .22 caliber bullet in a sabot in that 30 caliber. I couldn't get them all in the same hole but good enough to hit a coyote for sure. You can get 4000 fps + out of it (your .308) cheap and fun to shoot.

I bought the sabots on ebay from a guy in Maine. I used fmjs but you can use what ever you like. The sabots came with recipes for 30 30, 30 06 and 308 as I recall.

If you want to play with .308 at longer range it depends a bit on your .308. Barrel twist and length for a start. Every gun is an individual and maximum accuracy requires testing of various loadings until you find what it likes.

With my TRG22, 5x20x56 Nightforce, I went with the 165gr Sierra Match King. I loaded it over 4064 to 2700fps in Federal brass with Federal Large Rifle primer. .55" at 100yd, 1.3" at 300yd, 3.1" at 500yd. As with any gun it took a while to dial in the load this one really like. The grain weight of the powder charge is less important than the muzzle velocity. I have found over the years that accuracy is nearly identical with different powders of similar burn rate if you keep the muzzle velocity constant.

I've been playing with the 175gr recently with it's superior BC. Haven't yet got a load this good for it. But time will tell.

As an avid shooter/hunter i get why you want to use other firearms/loads but since you're a reloader why not just use your 223. Work up an accurate high BC bullet as close to 3000fps with whatever powder primer combo is most accurate and you're good. With my savage axis 223 and 69gr SMK I'm shooting 1/2 MOA groups. I've taken coyotes out to 450m and hit coyote sized targets out to 660

You would be correct! I took out a coyote from about 30 yards with one of the VMAX loaded in my K31 and I could have put my foot inside the exit wound.

I've used 175gr Sierra matchkings on yotes and from what I can remember it didn't tear them up to bad at all. Granted my rifle has a 20" barrel and those 175's were only doing 2400fps. RL-15 or varget is the way to go for .308 you won't be disappointed

I know its a one off but my friend shot a coyote yesterday with a 175gr SMK at 300m out of his 308 with almost no pelt damage. Surprised me

Default 308

I use my 308 for long range yote killing 168grn speer TM 41.5 grn benchmark or 42 grn imr 4166 ive set a few down at 450 460 yard mark they leave a dirty hole on both sides compensating bullet drop at those longer ranges is the biggest challenge
