My Euro Mount Instructions.
I see a lot of questions related to Euro mounts now that season is over. Here's the process I follow.
1. Simmer, don't boil. Use about 3/4 cup of OxiClean and a good squirt of dawn. Do in a pot big enough to get just over the edge of the bases of the antlers. To help avoid the antlers from being bleached wrap with Saran Wrap and duct tape bottoms. Do it outside, it reeks!
2. After 2 hours pull out and scrub as best as possible, if you have access to a pressure washer you can pressure wash gently. Be aware though. There is a lot of spray back and pieces go everywhere! Be careful especially around the eye cavity and the front nose piece as those can be fragile. Remove brain from the back with some type of hook tool.
3. Remove ear canals with small enough screwdriver. This allows you to get more of the flesh from behind the skull. Also remove with pliers the cartilage from the middle of the nose.
4. Put back in the pot for 1 and 1/2 hours with fresh OxiClean and Dawn. It's important that you put new chemicals in I found.
5. Remove any last remaining flesh and dry. It might need an extra half-hour but you can play it by ear. Just be careful not to over boil it as it can create a fragile skull. Some people leave the delicate nose bones in while others remove them. The choice is yours, some people say that they yellow over time.
6. Apply cream 40 proof peroxide ( skull only, wrap the base of the antlers so that you don't accidentally get it on). Cover in a garbage bag and let sit overnight.
7. Rinse, and then seal it with a mixture of Elmer's white glue and water. A 3 to 1 ratio. Helps keep the skull looking fresh and the teeth in. Dries clear.
8. Hang on wall!
Hope that helps!
