Default Blue Grouse

Two blues that I took recently. The first pic is what I would expect. The second blue was paired up with a ruffy. I know for sure because I shot both of them (the ruffy and the blue). As I said the first pic shows a blue with an entirely black tail fan. The second blue (that was paired up with the ruffy) has brown in its tail fan. So I'm thinking that this blue is a hybrid. Would you agree or have some other explanation?

While a hybrid is possible, I think you have a bird that is in the process of moulting.

The Top bird is a Rooster and blue you shot with the Ruffie is a hen and it looks on the juvenile side too...The male you shot is actually a very superb specimen...Nice!

Got my first Blue last year and it was the best tasting game bird I've ever had.

Congrats on a beauty - they're worth the hike!

Never seen or shot a blue before. How far up the hills or how far south would I have to go to get into them?

Very nice grouse

I've shot a whack of blue grouse. You've got 2 blue grouse there. Nicely done!

South is not necessary. From Grande Cache to Waterton, following the eastern slopes, you'll find them. High, but not in the rocks.
