Good job, that's a nice bull, and should be some good eating! More details on the hunt....?

So here is the long version.
My buddy and I got up to elk camp on the 16th at 2am as its a long drive from home and I had to work that morning. Once we got here we checked the first two spots we like to camp and both were taken so confidence dropped a bit as we thought the place was going to be full of hunters. By the time we got situated and in bed it was 4am so we slept in that morning and went out for an evening hunt. We didn't have any luck that night. So I decided to go on my own to a place about 2k into the bush where I had called an elk in 2 years ago but couldn't get a shot off. As soon as i got into the bush I realized just how wet it was. The only way to get an elk out would be helicopter, horse or on the old back.
So I got to where I was going by about 830 did a bit if calling. I got a little to comfortable on some peat moss and acually fell asleep for about 15 minutes at one point. At about 930 I decided to move a little bit. I walked about 300 yards stopping to bugle every little bit. Then finally I thought I heard something way off in the distance but I talked myself into it being my imagination. I walked towards the sound anyways and after 100 yards or so called again. Well this time instantly one called back and it sounded close and huge. I got a bit excited and had a bit of the shakes so I literally had to stop take a breath and calm myself down and come up with a game plan. I decided to cow call till I got to an opening where I thought I might have a clear lane to shoot. Well I let a couple cow calls and he bugles at me again this time he is withing 100 yards easy so I found a good tree held my gun at the only real lane I had and let a bugle go. Now I hear crashing and banging walking from right where I wanted it to. See an elk in my scope. But it's a cow. About 2 seconds later which felt like an eternity. He appears like the king of the forest. He just stopped broad side 50 yards maybe less. I pointed my gun at him but it just was not a clear shot so I had to wait all I needed was 2 steps. He finally walked into my 5by5 opening I had to shoot thru and I let him have one with my .338. He took off running so I scrambled for my reid to let a bugle go. I was very confident in my shot but did I miss he didn't flinch or anything. I walked up to where I shot and found a good blood trail so I gave him a good 15 and followed the blood to where I had last seen him. And sure enough where I last seen him was as far as he went. It was that moment I realized just how much work we had ahead of us. I was about 3km from the truck. We had a sxs at camp but it was way to wet and thick in their to even think of using it. So I went and got my buddy who was already at the truck waiting for me. We quartered him and hauled him out on our backs 3km. It took all day we were back in camp sore and tired by 7 that night.

Looks like the genes of the bulls just a tiny bit south of gp, same forest type. I shot his brother last year, maybe... . Lol Thanks for the pics and story. Congratulations

Nice bull! Looks like a gordondale bull, my hunting partner helped a couple guys from lacombe haul one out on Sunday with his quad. Couldn't be you guys though as you packed'r out on your backs. Congrats as its been tough hunting up here, hot, windy and nothing really calling except moose.
