Opening day of bow season 2011. Was so hot out that day I almost talked myself out of sitting in my stand. Sure glad I didn't!

Nathan not only is that a Great Velvet Whitey , i love the short season Cape.
As far as my personal best , i was lucky enough that Garry Donald accepted my story in this summer issue of Big Buck Mag. Its a 181 Gross...The best part of that hunt is my son shooting a 145" 6x6 . Its all about hanging with the hunting buddies during hunting season for me. took mine in extremely cold weather and the Bucks were in full rut....Good Times.

The story starts with the Band of Brothers .. 3 of them Whitetails , one tall n one wide n one nicer as a bit of both .. my 3 son's and I had gone out many times for a trip to the stand, just a log ground blind that they help make at the age of 9 and 7 and even their 4 year old bro help .. it had a log bench that you sat on and a back rest with dead trees and branches to break your outline the front was about 3 ft high with a table type bench rest and the side for the spotting scope and bino's to sit on .. we had found a couch cushion that had been lost off a truck and Grandma had cut in half and sowed some cloth on to make some seat cushion.. also had couch pillow form the back rest... we had seen these 3 bucks as 2 year olds and 3 year olds the years before from the stand but this year was the 4 time we saw them and they were dandy's .. didn't see them at the stand but on the way home from the high-way and I put the spotting scope on the window and took a look at them at a natural lick .. all three of the boys got a look at them from the car as they grazed away from the lick .. later that fall I went up looking for them with a buddy and had a running glimpse of them but it was not meant too be ..

the next season was back at the stand with a different buddy who want to harvest his first Mule deer .. the boys and I had been seeing lots of Mule deer bucks and Whitetails also Bull Moose and Bull Elk from the stand .. even called out a Wolf for them one day.. but we had not seen the Band of Brothers that year yet

the morning started off with nothing in sight and I mean nothing .. wow where were the deer.. no Wt or Mulies.. day light was like clock work for the deer but nobody was there .. I was getting worried when a lone 2 x 1 Mule buck showed him self at the top of the ridge we were watching at 9:30 am .. so I asked my buddy if that was good for him or we could wait as I had been seeing some nice bucks some days.. he said that he need meat for the family and want that one so off we went to get him that buck .. we had about a mile and a half to go to get up there so I new that he would most likely move but I new their trails as I had watch them so many times with my boys .. as we climb up the hill I took him up a ravine that went up to the top and as I went I kept stopping to wait for him and glass ahead .. one of those times bingo !!! a small 4 x 4 Mulie popped up out of nowhere .. I ask him if he want to shoot it but he said that he couldn't get his breath in time and I should shoot it as I had a tag .. Bang down went my Mule deer.. I didn,t even gut it as the 2 x 2 was close and we had only to go another 200 yards to crest the hill .. just before we stopped to get our breaths .. then crested and there was his buck still grazing about 200yds ahead .. he said it was to far for him with his gun so I said just use mine which was bigger than his .300(mine 7mm Mag)
and that I would turn up the BDC to 200 yards so it would be zeroed at 200 .. I ask if he was ready and I would spot for him he said he was and Boom .. it was a clean miss .. load again I said as the buck just stood there .. pump house shot I said ... and Boom down it went ..

for a day that started with nothing for 3 hrs .. it was starting to look fine .. now we had too do some gutting and get them off this hill before it got really hot .. by noon we had pulled the 3 point up the hill and over the other side too a cut trail ex road on the mill cut that we could access with a trike

it was noon by the time we had got him down to the road and logs covered .. so up we went to get his .. we had his about 1/2 way to the trail when we took one of our many breaks .. as I look around I had some movement to my left so I quickly brought up the bino's and wow the middle buck of the Band of Brothers.. I had no bullets left for my gun as I had only load 3 in and left the rest in truck.. I offered him the Whitetail as he had the only gun with bullets but he said it would be going by at a range to far for him .. if I want to use it I could .. so with out a second I reached over an pick up his gun and slung it as I knew the drop for a .300 at 300 yards.. taking aim at the buck as he was walking slowly across the cut with his tongue hang out on that hot day as if by faith , he stopped right even with us at 300 yards .. Boom and he folded up and dropped .. nice shot he said .. I smiled and look up saying thanks .. we left his and went down to my Whitetail .. as I looked at him I realized that he was the middle one and not the biggest of the Brothers.. but he was a mountable buck

so every time I look up there he is above me and I remember the Band of Brothers

David

Wow im a little jealous of some of these bucks lol...sadly I don't have a pic of my personal best (dont think I'd throw it up anyway as its def smaller then some of these bucks lol) My Dad's PB is more impressive and a matched set to my brothers though. Both five or six points (cant remember for sure) that they happened to get on the same day.

Love this thread though. Its awesome to see some of these bucks
