Default Calling Ducks

Hey all

Taking a look at some videos on YouTube but it all seems a bit overwhelming for a beginner.

Seems like a guy needs to start by learning the quack but to have the realism one likely needs to have some skill. Is it tough to progress from beginning to someone that has some realism to their sequence?

Any tips from the fowlers here? Type of call? manufacturer? Any videos that I might won't to check out. I am just randomly watching YouTube.

First training session with a duck retrieve on water today. Little girl did awesome so I am REALLY excited.

Default Calling

ya buddy's right calling ducks in ab isnt really effective till late season an even then it's not really needed.the mojo does the calling for ya.dot think you need to be a pro caller to kill ducks.so don't stress.geese respond fantastic to te call if ya know what to say to em an when.finally to the point where I can call birds back after shooting em.took 5 yrs to get to that point but it doesn't happen often..good luck man!

The call industry has been marketed the very same way as any other , advertising!
Apperantly unless you use a particular call - surprisingly used by the TV personality that is being fearured, you will not be able to call a duck, goose, elk, deer , or whatever else you are trying to lure in!

Calling stuff is not rocket science, and it's not complicated , however we have been conditioned over the years to think it is!
Over calling any mcritter is about the most common mistake made, and also calling where the crtters are not.

Garb a call, listen to the birds and have fun with it!

Forget calling ducks---it's unnecessary and creates a noise nuisance for everyone around you.. If your dekes are in a spot the ducks want to be (and you're well hidden ) they'll come, if they aren't they won't.

Smile Practice!

When I was just starting out, I was a very poor shot so I needed them closer. I practiced in the off season on live birds, and was able to get them to come and look. I did notice that when I stopped calling to get both hands on the 870, they would flare right now. I was able to hold the call in my mouth and keep calling while I got the gun in hand and the safety off, by then they were too close to miss.

In Alberta what has been said above is true, there are lots of ducks and you'll get them anyway if you can shoot a bit. I still find them fun to call.

I buy the "old" fashion calls off of e-bay, Faulk's honker 100, and some other famous ones from years ago, they all work.

Default This is great. Thanks Guys

This is why this forum is great. Having never hunted ducks I watched lots of duck hunts on Wild TV and youtube to get a base of information. In doing so I come to the conclusion that calling ducks seemed vital to success. Yes I know that Hunting shows air because of advertising but even on youtube calls seem to be calling all the time. As some have stated maybe the requirement for calling is regional.

Decoys seem to be way more important. Just said to someone in a PM that I now have to convince the wife I need to spend more money on hunting. My go to line for birds is "this isn't money I am spending on hunting it's money we are spending on the dog." Worked for the shootgun, now to work on my delivery for the decoys.

Thanks All.

Just buy a robo duck, it's that easy. Just try not to shoot robo when the ducks are landing on its back.
