The endless elk questions.. Please help
Hi all, trying to decide where to draw for elk, thinking of either the saddle hills area, west of Rocky mtn house (328,330,429,326) area, or go to the complete other end and try near wainwright or prarie wmus, I have several county maps and don't mind putting on some kms and knocking on doors, I hunt both rifle and bow. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, and if there's anyone out there who would want to partner up I'd love the company of another serious hunter. Thanks

Elk
Hunt the place that's spclosest to your house that way you can scout easier and more often. I think that's the success to elk hunting, hunting them isn't that hard once you've found them. Finding them is the problem.

I have hunted 429 330 and 338 for 7 years and yet to see a bull elk last year was my first time actually finding herds I'm glad 429 and 328 are a no supplemental zone as less hunters but still hunted hard

328 or 30 better shot at getting an Oryx.
Other than that. Prairies and permission. Gets my vote. Good luck. Never give up.
I think its more about real estate. Location location location.

The areas you suggest are general Bulls 3-point and better. Don't need a draw there. Save up lots of points and then decide. In the meantime hunt those areas for a bull. They're there...trust me! If you can pull one outa there it'll make your future hunta somewhat of a cake walk.
Use your truck or quad to find the start of sign your looking for then get on foot once you've pinned them somewhat. Go where no one else wants to go!...cause it's too steep and rough or too far! I'd Let your points build...by then you'll know where ya wanna go!

As others have said already, finding them is 90% of the battle.
This time of year is perfect for quick scouting, as forest undergrowth hasn't started to grow yet and it is very easy to find trails, scat, rubs, and many other forms of sign from the past months. If you find a sign heavy area, keep it pinned and watch closely over the summer months. If things are good the elk will be there come hunting time. Draws don't open for another two months, that's plenty of time to get boots on the ground and find some promising spots.

Thanks everyone for your input, very much appreciated, being from Cold Lake it's tough to decide on an area to commit to being that most spots are around 7 hours driving
