I had the floor poured already so I built them on perfect level, and a forklift to stand the walls up (nice little cheat)

I did have help, couple friends here and there when needed. It really was not rocket science, and 4 walls aren't that hard to frame in a day, 2 big doors meant a lot of nothing to do, 40' walls were 2 piece and 50's were 3 iirc.

I am a contractor 35yrs. I quote jobs . If there is a cost over-run ,I eat it, take it as a lesson and make sure I quote better next time. Any extras such as the crane should be discussed prior to the expense, otherwise that would also be on the contractor.

Yeah, framing 4 walls that size in a day is doable. But I would allow a half day for one guy to cut 160 odd studs, cut the headers and trimmers and nail them all together. Leaving less than half a day for trusses, ladders, fascia, sheeting, porkchops, garage door liners, installing man doors, overhead doors..... That's a real solid two days work IMO.

The doors and windows weren't installed in those 2 days, trusses either. Just walls like I said.

Split the difference, and tell him you will not be giving a positive recommendation, as he has shown he doesn't deserve it. (not just the money....the delay, the tyvec, the garbage, the mis-estimating).

If you recommended him to me, and I experienced these things, I'd think less of you, and I'd have real issues with him.

If he wanted this job to "build his business", I'd say he messed that up.

Lots of different perspectives, would love to hear how this ends up working out. Please post once you have it settled with him.

So we got everything settled yesterday. I printed off 2 copies of a construction contract outlining what I was going to pay him and at what stages of construction. He agreed without issue and we signed the written contracts. I ended up paying $2000 for labour and no picker truck. This whole scenario could have been a real nightmare but ended up going well in the end, thank you to everyone on here for their input and opinions.
