Keg, you could have been right, sometimes need to be more patient early in season. Numbers are at 8 marten now so looks like average year for marten.

When I was trapping I would have dry spells where nothing seemed to be moving. Many times I wondered if I had taken too many the year before but then things would pick up. At the end of the season, looking at the numbers, there were trends but no big changes most years.
To the best of my recollection Lynx was the only species that ever did fluctuate wildly. From boon to bust. But even then it took a couple of years to see the big change.

Keg, I still believe the 10 year lynx cycle affects many other fur species. Our trapline neighbor was overrun with lynx last few years and his marten dropped off drastically. They are a very aggressive preditor, not just on rabbits. Picked up a few more marten on last trap checks.

We are at 17 marten now on ~80 boxes this year
There is definitely a cycle on our line the last couple years
2015: 37 marten on 120 boxes
2016: 11 marten on 100 boxes
2017: 5 marten on 90 boxes
This year so far in Nov alone: 17 marten on 80 boxes
IM just a junior. I am only running 20 plywood boxes right now as have been for the past 2 seasons. With another 20 plastic boxes coming I hope to do better
2015-16: 2 marten
2016-17: 10 marten
2017-18: 6 marten so far
