Anyone build their own archery targets?
Just wondering if anyone builds their own archery targets and how they build them. My new BTX cruises too far into a couple of store bought targets and is ripping vanes off. Looking for ideas on tough, portable target ideas (bags, blocks).
Cheers,
Doc

Build a bunch of big 3ft X 4Ft Targets from 3/4 frame and saved plastic wrap from shipping departments...got mesh and face from Bulldog targets but any good quality weaved vinyl tarp like material will work...
I built frame , inserted stiff wax cardboard, an arrow mesh and vinyl on one side filled it up compressed with clamps than more cardboard mesh and cover for top side...been shooting on outdoor range for several years now...
due to vinyl cover when left outside or UV will eat it like any thing else...
Stops arrows dead...only issue is a little harder to pull than most...the fix is an arrow lube with a drop on field points, after a dozen rounds another drop may be needed...having said that many commercial targets are harder to pull than these...

target
I know its not Homemade but if you can get your hands on a large medium density foam pipeline pig ( a 36" is great ), they work fantastic. I've been thumping away at mine for over 10 years now.

I made a hillbilly target.
A bag of wood chips from the mill and a felt marker to make the rings.
Not the best target but it fits my budget.

I packed a cardboard box with used industrial shrink wrap. I got a piece from work that covered a 10'x10'x20' piece of equipment, cut it into pieces and stuffed it into a box I had (about 24"x14"x18").
I shoot an older Browning Verado at 50 lbs, so not the fastest or most powerful shooter, but my arrows only penetrate maybe 6-8". I've hit it with broadheads a couple of times and they come out the back, but the arrows stop well before the vanes.
So far it's taken about 300 shots, and shows no signs of failure beyond a few missing pieces of cardboard. It's essentially made of garbage though, so it'll be within my budget to replace when the time comes.

Large burlap sack or large woven bag full of old clothes. Stops all arrows and very easy to pull out.

I used to use this too. Works great and is perhaps the best broadhead target I have ever shot. For broadheads consider filling a cardboard box with rags. Works fantastic. Way better than any foam target I have ever shot

I actually tried the box of rags last year based on all the good reviews and was sorely disappointed. My broadheads were coming out the back on the first shot and by the tenth or so the box was in pretty rough shape and my arrows we're going up to the vanes.
My 18-1 has taken darn near a hundred hits with the broadheads and is still nearly perfect on most sides. Granted I don't shoot as much as lots of guys but I've had it 5 years and it's still going strong. I Also don't ever leave it outside.
Just my humble opinion. But if the box of rags works for you, good on ya!

You need more rags in it.

I was thinking taking a bunch of cardboard... cutting it into strip about 8-10 inches wide... then layering them... trying to copy the block targets they sell.
I'll tell you how it works

Last week I gave away 7 large feed bags stuffed with recycled shrink wrap off pallets of beer. Bags were .25 cents each and wrap was free.

This is what I use as well. We get spray foam jobs from time to time and a case of beer goes a really long way. I have a 3 x 3 x 2 waxed cardboard box that's amazing. I am not sure it will ever wear out. Only downside is a powerbait like odor.

Back in the day that's how many shops made their targets...it works but problem is it wears very quickly ...it has to be tightly pressed which is a pain as one has to rotate shot out areas often...

Much the same for me, took an old cardboard box and filled with old clothes as tight as I could. Only about 12 inches deep, stops an arrow dead and easy to pull out. Just think you need to repack from time to time as I have a hole behind the box in my drywall that I have to explain to the wife one of these days when she finds it...

LOL. same at my house. except for me its an old hidabed couch that now has holes in the backrest.
Just remember to reshuffle the rags in the box every so often. otherwise you get holes behind the box as well.

I have a 20" pipeline pig that I used for 8 years ... this year I had too change it up so I cut one end to get at the guts which is a different foam then the out side... took the guts out and got spray foam cans. Sprayed a couple cans in and the took cardboard cutouts to fit snog inside and compressed the foam just sprayed and so on until it was full and then put a final layer of cardboard on top and taped it shut so the foam would stay compressed... works good now and it will be easy to fix later on .... I have a second pig that has not been used yet and thinking of just gutting it and spraying it right off the hop

OK thanks for the feedback. I was thinking of either using ratchet straps or threaded rods to compress them. Think that would work?

Not to derail but what do you guys use for back stops, say if you miss the target?

Lots of how toos seem to use the threaded rod approach. An immense amount of compaction could be achieved with a few peices of ready-rod

I tried that, 4 mins of shooting and 1.5 hrs of looking for arrows.
Wanted to give up, but with little ones around, I just couldn't.
Found one in 2 mins. 90 mins the find the other. Walked over it about 20 times. HAH

Yeah, that was my issue. I'm extremely new to archery as well.
Been a few months since I shot. Lined up the 60 yard pin at 25...
It was a bad time.

Does the box not get destroyed pretty quickly though? Especially using broadheads.

I use old feed bags stuffed with cardboard. Haven't used broad heads in it but it works pretty good in my opinion for being free.

There was someone here that came up with a marvel idea...he took a large semi ridged suitcase...filled it with favorite fill...foam, plastic wrap or rags
held up really well...would hold a paper target...came with carry handle

Built a couple out of hot tub lids. Cut one half of the lid in three equal pieces. tuck tape to geather. Threw a coat of rock gard on my the latest one I built so tape dose not weather. Shot my first lid target for five years before arrows started to pass threw. Only down side is that arrows get a film on them after a pile of shots. I just scrape it off after shooting that day. Cheep and tough target
