Default Great Weekend Deer Hunting

One of those magical weekends. Saturday my 85 yr old meat hunter uncle got his best deer to date from my ground blind at 2:05. Icing on the cake, he used my dads rifle. Dad is his best friend for 55 yrs and as of this summer, had to go to a nursing home. Although he quit hunting at 80, it is a sweet touch to see his rifle still taking game.

Sunday my 23 yr old son was in the blind with me as he works on Saturdays. He took his first deer at 2:05. Can it get any better than being with your kid when a first happens out hunting and taking his first with your rifle. He also used mine in 2019 to anchor his first moose, a 54 inch bull.

Last year was the first year hunting this place. It had been inherited by my friends wife & bro when their dad died 10 yrs back but they never did anything with the farm. Last summer with covid closing stuff, we opened up the old farm yard of grass and junk and made a sweet camping spot. Of course on quad rides around the fields and seeing what my cams were taking pics of, I knew this was a deer hunting spot. So last Nov was a scouting year and I found out where the deer walk, go and come out to feed.

This year I bought a ground blind, knew where to put it, re sighted the rifles so they could reach out a bit more(were bush hunters used to making 100 yrd shots) and set it up on the 31st of October and Nov 11th was the first weekend sitting in it. I also bought a archery deer target and thought it would be a good decoy. Jimmy Big Buck from Cabela's did not disappoint.

Left the horns off and boy did the bucks come to it. Which worked good as it drew them out from the 200 yrd shot and to a nice 130 yrd shot but still far enough away from the blind so they did not spook.

On Saturday, all hopes on how the decoy would work came together. With winds of 30 km's and Windchill's in the minus 20's, the big buddy heater sure was a treat. Kept us nice and cozy.

One happy guy here witnessing some milestone moments. I will be back in the blind this weekend. Hope some bruiser that's still looking for a mate comes by.

Congrats on the two special milestones and good on you for setting up the guys for success. Fantastic to hear that your uncle is still putting them down at 85, I hope I can be so lucky some day!

I posted my kids 54 inch moose back in 2019, someone else said that. I told the kid and he thinks I am nuts. But I see a resemblance .
