Default Africa

Hi guys my boss bought me a 10 day safari in South Africa with Adasonia safari’s
I am bloody excited
I have a couple questions for those of you that have hunted the dark continent
The trip includes Sable, impala, blesbuck, a night hunt for bush pig.
I can add any other animals I want, just have to pay the trophy fee
What else would you want to hunt?
Eland?
Also, taxidermy?
I am a big fan of euro mounts, but would like maybe some tanned hides,
Ship them back and have a taxidermist here do it?
If so what did shipping cost?
The trip is next august, everything is paid for, and includes using their guns and ammo, but I can bring my own, was this a pain? Or easy?
I have only lightly looked into hunting in Africa before but quickly realized that the likelihood of me ever being able to afford it on my own, with all life's costs with kids and a farm was very much out of reach.
So now with this trip happening I am at loss.
I am beyond excited, and feel very fortunate to work for a company that would do this for me.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Never been to Africa but the bush buck would be top of my list. Very cool pattern, they are supposed to be a bit of a challenge, and the fact the little buggers are known to actually fight back

An impressive little antelope both in how they look and there mannerisms

Heck if you don’t try to hunt a bush buck with the opportunity you have you and I can never be friends

Gemsbok would definitely be on my list. And probably a Cape Buffalo. Probably any good animal I could afford would have a stalk put on it.

Not to brag, but my company is paying for three nights at Ramada hotel, and the rest of the expenses for a 3 day hunt at Camp Wainwright this December...

Can I come?

I’d say kudu and cape buffalo but know nothing about the area.

Most outfits will have a trophy list and price table. I would get into contact with the Owner and ask them for a list. Who are you hunting with?

I hunted Kudu, Gemsbok, Impala, and Springbok on my trip 10 years ago. Also included Jackals and small predators we came across.

I had the opportunity to "hunt" an Eland, however we came across them so frequently on the game reserve that it felt more like hunting domestic cattle. They did not try to run from us at all. Your game reserve may be better than that.

I chose to get my taxidermy done there only after visiting the taxidermy shop. It was well done and impressive, I had 4 mounts and one euro done. I am happy with the result, for around $2800 cost in 2014. I have seen some mounts done here at triple the cost, and in most cases it is worth it. We have some amazing Taxidermists here in AB, and I will go that route next time.

Shipping was easy using an import/export company here, cost me $1600.

I used their rifles as I was spending more time afterward travelling around the country. It was one less thing to worry about for me, however I hope some guys who took their own chime in on their experience.

You're going to have a great time. I hope you post some pics when you get back.

I was on a hunt with Mof in 2019 at Adansonia Safaris. My wife and I harvested 13 animals. Mof runs a top-notch business, and you will be very happy with whatever Limpopo offers you. Shot me a PM and we can discuss if you like.

No hunt is complete without Kudu and Zebra.
When I went, kudu was my number one animal I wanted. Makes a very impressive shoulder mount, but takes a lot of wall space too.
I wanted a zebra, just for a rug, but my wife insisted on a shoulder mount. I really like the shoulder mount, but now she wishes we had it done as a rug
My favorite of all the animals I shot, is the sable. Where I had previously considered kudu as the epitomy of " Africa" I now consider the sable as number one!! I have both the sable and the zebra done as pedestal mounts on the same base. The two black and white critters really compliment each other.
I shot an eland and had it shoulder mounted. Not suprising, but an 1800 lb. antelope makes for one heck of a large shoulder mount that takes a fair chunk of stout wallspace to hang. you would really want to make sure you have the room to hang one of these.

I'm pretty sure you can legitimately shoot a giraffe in Africa.
They've got a giraffe hide on the wall at Echo outdoors.

Don’t believe everything you read. There’s many places overrun with Giraffes. They’re a popular cull animal in SA

You can hunt wild ones in Zim too

You’ve got a great boss!

Regarding trophies, it kind of depends on your financial situation. I’d have good photos taken, and euromounts and maybe a couple flat skins. Understand that they don’t do a very good job of most taxidermy in Africa and accept it for what it is. You’ll have a great time!

What game you choose to hunt is very personal and is up to you to decide upon. With that being said I would at least highly recommend taking a cow Cape buffalo if the cost of a bull is too excessive. I went once for my 50th in the Limpopo province and the cow buff was the highlight of the planning and execution of that adventure. A cow is affordable and every bit as dangerous as a bull. If you never return you can always say you took one of “the big five”…

Gemsbuck and Kudu - fairly inexpensive and classic ‘Africa’.
Try to arrange a bird hunt while there -bring some guennai fowl feathers home - and some African porcupine quills home - cool souvenirs!
Unless firearms are a big interest to you (gun-nut), use their rifles and skip the hassle of travelling with guns & ammo.
I had my ‘Euro mounts’ done there on local teak-wood plaques - pleased with the results. Had Springbuk and Antelope hides tanned there and a gun case made. Very satisfied with the results. Good value and you’re contributing to employment and ‘added value’ of wildlife to the local economy.

Sable included? $$$$$$ Generous boss!

I’ll answer some of your questions:
R
You’d regret not taking a Kudu. They are awesome animals, and the tenderloins are my new favorite.

I wanted to take my guns, but the travel times are so extreme, the last thing I wanted was an extra couple hours on each side in an airport. Not to mention if you get redirected to a non firearm friendly country you could loose them for good.

I took 4 animals, Kudu, Sable, Nyala, and Zebra. Euro mounts for all the horned animals with flat skins. Only a flat skin rug for the zebra. All being done there. My house doesn’t work for shoulders, plus Euro mounts are easy, and easy to ship. Some ALberta taxidermists might know the animals but the South Africans know them better. If there’s a screw up, where can a Canadian taxidermist find a kudu cape to fix a mistake? The 3 euros and 4 skins were $2k. I paid half as deposit and still waiting for shipping estimate.

Find some stuff to do during non hunting days, wildlife is everywhere. You’ll want to hunt your wallet dry. We visited Kruger, had a river fishing day, and watched a rugby game.

Go out to a bar/restaurant a night or two. It’s dirt cheap, helps the local economy and a ton of fun.

Pack light. I didn’t. In the end I used 3 shirts, 2 pairs of pants and 3 pairs of underwear. They do your laundry everyday. And they do a fantastic job of it.

I had no idea what I was in for, but it’s by far mine and my wife’s favorite trip.

Enjoy and don’t stress!
