How early have you called moose?
Got a moose draw in 254 this year, and would like to take one with the bow. Just curious how early you've successfully called in bulls? I know I've tried it before early in bow season when I spotted one while hunting deer or elk, and often it seems like they either didn't care or got spooked by it, so don't want to jump the gun.

The WMU I usually bowhunt for moose is within about 30 minutes of your WMU. Moose action usually picks up on my cams after Sept. 20th. The last two bulls I arrowed I called in on Sept. 27th and 28th.
If you have limited time to be out there I'd concentrate on Sept. 25-Oct. 5 for calling one within bow range IMO.....
Good luck!

Just remember Calling is not just making Cow and Bull calls.
Breaking willows and even cracking thin ice to get at the water will work...
Mid summer to late winter moose become more sociable and don't mind company

I called a Moose in July. I called him Joe, Hey Joe I said.
But I don't think his name was Joe cause he never answered.

I called two little yearling bulls on September 16.. they were hot and horny and if I hadn’t got the quad turned around I’m sure they probably would have mounted it. The latest I have ever called a bull in was October 16.

My friend called in a bull 2 days ago at his property. They are getting interested. Good time to start trying.

They're definitely getting interested.
I called in a bull yesterday to 10 yards using a cow elk call.

What units are they coming to calls?
I’m in 522 and nothing happening yet.
We’ve seen a few cows with no bulls.
Not coming to calls either.
Seeing Bull sign but no sightings or replies to calls.

Bulls often don't reply to calls. But they may still come to a call.
I've had that happen more then once.
I can't comment on how early they might come to a call. I've never tried calling before the middle of September.
I do know they will come to a call well after the calling season, or what we think of as prime calling season, is long over. Because I have tried that and had it work.
I suspect they might come to a call well before the calling season, but I can't say they do.

Had a grunting bull chasing a moaning cow yesterday. Heard them before I saw them. I was on the ground sorting out my tree steps when they both ran into my area. Cow decided to run down the trail I was crouched down on. At 5 yards I jumped out of the way, when I did she saw me at the last second and turned a bit. Came close to getting trampled. Cow ran and bull stopped to a call at 40 yards. To bad no tag in this wmu. Moose are getting frisky, get out there.

Moose Rut
They were certainly active this weekend
Lots of bull grunts and cow calls.
Had 3 within 25 yards and everyone only offered frontal shots. Saw a total of 8 different moose.
Pretty exciting day.
Did I get one.......nah. But heading out after work again today.
I was just west of Edmonton.

I spent all of this past Fri and Sat in a few areas where I'm hunting around Sundre without any responses. I've been calling around the open water areas. Maybe it's too hot and I should try something different? I'm going back for 5 days starting this coming Friday so hopefully something changes.

They are definitely in the rut and the bulls are cruising. It’s a dead giveaway when I have a huge increase in bull moose on my cams

Earliest was September 16th.
Latest was October 31st.
Both of them came in grunting the whole way.
Prime time is Now however. 1st week of October is always money.

Bow hunted moose in 238, 936, 338, 346 and 248. Many screwups (and quite few passed opportunities chasing a monster 60” one year) before finally successful this year. Here’s my moose hunting notes condensed:
Pre sept 20 they’re not interested (saw two different cows alone, sept 11 and 15 this year)
Sept 20 little bulls start chasing/annoying the cows. Called in and killed my (small) bull on sept 22. Have seen many little bulls running around on sept 20 in previous years.
Oct 1 - 10 big bulls get after it. Weather doesn't matter much, the cows are ready and the bulls have a job to do. Peak breeding day is supposedly oct 4
Oct 10 - 15 big bulls tiring out. Success depends on cold weather and finding a bull that still wants to chase. It’s remarkable just how hard the “off switch” hits em, can go from seeing 3-5 bulls/day to zero overnight.
Oct 15 big bulls are on their chosen winter spot and rarely responsive. Small bulls are still moving around some, but rapidly tiring.
Nov 1 pointless to blind call. You may get a territorial response if you are right into his winter home. I’m very sure thats how the occasional bull gets called in late season. The moose really don’t want to leave their willow jungles.
They will ALWAYS circle down wind of a caller. Grab some cow estrous and scent wicks, and place them on either side of your anticipated scent stream so the bull doesn’t cross it.
If I was picking a week, oct 1-7. two weeks, sept 23-oct 7. Any later you might run into that off switch and when they’re done and buried into the jungle, it’s pretty well over for archery.

Tried calling a young bull in late June/early July for fun .......... strangely he stopped, was staring in our direction for a while, and when he resumed his activity we would call him again, did this 4-5 times until he actually started circling the tree/muskeg line towards us until he spotted us ....and we blew our cover.
He looked unamused and left us with a head held high trot (never seen that before either). Kinda looked like one of those show horses actually. Totally unexpected.
Never tried that before, didn't know what would happen .... was pretty cool
