Thumbs down Island Deer Die Off

Twenty-two cases of fast-spreading deer disease confirmed on islands

A fast-spreading virus has killed at least 22 deer on *Vancouver Island and several Gulf Islands since the beginning of the year, according to the *province.

Last fall, the Ministry of *Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development said it was tracking the outbreak of a deer disease after the deaths of about 60 deer on Galiano, Mayne and Parker islands.

Sad - but a little funny that they used pictures of the Fallow deer on Sydney Island. They occasionally had a cull there and at least one shop in Victoria would get the meat in (Chou Chou Charcuterie on Fort St).

For years there’s been problems with over population on the Gulf Islands - very few predators and strongly anti-hunting locals.

I hope the AHD doesn’t kill too many more.

The ol’mans Back yard is full of them...sitting on the back deck they just hang out....we use to hunt them with shotguns but where I use to hunt it now is a college....the deer are still there in hordes though....I said sooner or later nature will thin them out due to the high numbers.
