Default Taking predators with a shotgun while Grouse hunting-Slugs or Buckshot?

While grouse hunting I often only have my 12gauge, I would like to be able to take a Wolf if I see one close so I’m wondering if anyone has experience with slugs or buckshot. Wondering what effective ranges would be as well. I have never used either.

P.S. because I know it will come up if you use a modified, improved modified or full choke (full being preferable) and aim for the very top of the head, and keeping the range semi reasonable you will never get a B.B. in the breast. I’ve killed many many grouse this way, as did my grandfather. Use 2 3/4 #4’s-the cheapest ones you can find.
