Smile A few pics from Peace Country

Starting the day

me on the ridge

me in the coulee

Dad

me on the far ridge

Ending the day

Seen 1 bull elk, about 50 yards away from me all by him self. 7 moose, too many whitey does to count, 3 whitey bucks and 3 mulie bucks.. We tend to see all the animals when we dont have a camera.
When I saw the bull elk he spooked so I let out a cow call and he stopped.. Let out a bugle and he came in closer to me. The next morning we could hear crashing down in the coulee about 30 minutes before legal light but never saw the elk.. But we did hear a bunch of cow elk chirping here and there. Never did shoot an elk but we saw lots of sign and could hear them just wasnt able to get a shot off at one.

Makes me want to visit the Peace River country even more.

Looks like you have a good mild winter going.

The temperature up there these past 2 days have been really nice! Wednesday afternoon it was +7. Then thursday +5, and Friday was +2.. But around where we were there was some bad winds but other than that really nice weather.

Question:

What will it mean to overall game numbers IF this winter stays as mild as it has so far?

Will there be a noticeable increase in game numbers next fall? By game I mean mulies, elk, whitetail and moose.

It should certainly help some young deer and rut-weary bucks pull through. Will help the calves of other species as well.

Without making this too complicated I would like to get an idea of big game numbers in the Peace River Region only. How about this: On a scale of 1 to 10 how do numbers compare with 25 years ago? 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest. You can give a general answer or break it out by species (moose, elk, mulies, whitetails)

Beautiful pics. I've always made it a point to stop in the Peace River for a rest and fresh air when I've traveled from NWT through Alberta. Always stopped and watched the mule deer walking up and down the hills.

Call the Peace River Fish & Wildlife office and ask to speak to a senior wildlfie bio...they could possibly answer with data from surveys.

Hmm since im only 15, I can only speak of a few years ive been there. For the trips ive done, 1 in 2006, 1 in 2008, 1 in 2010, 1 in 2011, 1 in 2012. The elk populations are the same, the mulies have decreased ALOT(lets not get in to that as it will start a very heated discussion lol, and moose as far as I can tell their the same in numbers. More cow calf pairs but there are some areas that definately hold alot of good bulls though.

I would have to second that. Mule deer are way down, but this warm winter should help. The wolves and coyotes have a harder time takeing the animals down when there is no snow, we need two more winters like this.

The only one that suprised me a little bit was moose..thought it would have been a bit higher based on some posts on other threads and discussions with some people that have hunted moose up there this year. The place must have been loaded with moose back then.

What keeps the moose numbers in check in Peace River?

x2 I think the bad winters and the wolves realy did there number on the moose up here. Now having said that there is still good moose population in different areas, it all depends on were you go. You have to do your home work.

Well said, the property we were hunting had alot of moose. We went down to another place 30kms away and there were coyote and wolf prints everywhere and 1 moose kill as you can see in the picture. Muledeer I find doesnt matter where you go you wont find many. With that being said I did see 3 really nice bucks but on the property with next to no wolf tracks.
