I'm not sure about the Calgary area but in Lethbridge a business called Saddle it up will take them from you. I took mine in after shooting it and doing nothing to it mearly bringing it to them and got 40$ for it. She said they are getting anywhere from 15$ - 40$ for them depending on the condition of the dog.

I don't get it how can someone pay $40 for a frozen coyote when the pelt sells for $50 (avg) in an auction..? It needs to be skinned, fleshed, dried, shipped to the auction...

lol you are not doing well with your coyotes then if that is all you get. Most guys that know how to put a coyote on a board will average $90+ average. I got $88 a piece last year and that included a lot of the junk $7 ones as well as a bunch in the $140+ range. It's worth the time to skin them now days and not blow them up if you are shooting them.

But I was looking at Eastern coyotes, apparently Western go for more.
I wonder why..?

Nube, or Mark should probably chime in, but its about size, color, and fur quailty. Most top earners are Medium sized felmales.

Fur Harvesters March auction

Nafa is the sale you want to look at. Very few Canadians ship coyotes to fur harvester. Top lost western 700$. After that it's between 90 to 156 for good coyotes

Western coyotes are lighter in color and the fur is finer. The easterns are thick wire like hair and dark in color usually. I may be wrong but think they may have bigger coyotes than here. I don't know much about it but it is always better to have a Heavy western coyote in the hand than an Eastern. Usually almost twice the money

So Nube- a guestion for you. I have watched a variety of nature based/wildlife documentary shows on coyotes and wolves and read quite a bit about them. They have stated that almost all eastern coyotes have some wolf dna in thier make-up. In my limited handling of wolves all of them have much courser hair. Could this be the reason for the lower price of eastern coyotes ? Just thinking that the courser haired wolf dna in some eastern coyotes may devalue the pelt.

Could be but like I said I am not knowing much on the subject. I am going by what I am told by the guys catching coyotes out east on what their coyotes are all about. It could have to do with the underfur as well. Maybe we have better underfur on our coyotes that have more "fluff" to them compared to in the U.S and out East. Either way I like the prices because catching them for $40-50 just wouldn't be worth it if you wanted to make a decent dime on them.

It also has to do with where our dogs live. In the East the terrain is very tight. A lot of bush. I believe that with the coarser hair and the thicker brush, they get damaged easier. The guard hairs are just not in as good as shape.

Sure we have bush yotes here. But the diversity and the amount of open country they can live in also keeps the hair in better shape overall. Not for all of them of course but for a bunch of them.

Couple a damaged pelt with darker non desirable color and you get the lower averages.

I am no expert though. Just what a fella told me in the trapper course. And he told me he wasn't an expert either so take it with a grain of salt.
