Default Not top o the food chain this evening….

Three days ago…. Wolves in my deer patch.

Now this guy….. he shows up like clockwork this time of year.

The lil guy looks all growed up now.

Just a reminder ……. Some grizz is still our and about. This guy is roaming for gutpiles. He’s been doing this in this area for a few years now.

Do you figure he shows up for the gut piles or does he pass through on the way to a den?

I’ve been seeing a set of grizz tracks here at this time for the past 5 or so years. When I hunt this area… I often cross his track set in several spots… he’s meandering around at least a 2km squared area…. I figure he’s gotta be lookin for gut piles… there’ll be wandering tracks in this area for a week or two. Then hunting season is over n I don’t tromp around this area after that.

Bessie, do you think he’s become conditioned that the sound of a gunshot means the potential of a relatively easy meal?

I have no idea

Guess if I shoot one there and wait around I could maybe find out……

But…I do know he’s not concerned about people scent… his track goes over other boot tracks from hunters.

Buddies shot an elk opening morning in 318, less than 24 hours later a Grizz had cleaned up the gut pile, he couldn't have been far away. It's one of those things you have to keep in your mind.

How wide is the pad? That will give an idea of how big the bear is. Anything less than 6” wide is a pup lol. Granted I still wouldn’t want to come face to face with one but yeah 6” and bigger is a large bear at least for the GYE. Not sure about AB but imagine it’s similar.

I think the bears and other predators hear the ravens screaming away at kill sites and search them out.

You knock down an elk or deer or moose and that big boy is around. You should have one in the chamber ready to fire should he show up. It won't simply be a matter of you backing away, you can bet your sweet ass he will be charging and they can make a long distance short in a blink of the eye. Better to shoot and face the consequences. If a grizz at 50 yards is bearing down on me, I'm shooting to kill knowing full well it might not be a lethal shot for him and he will keep coming and need more than the one shot. Better to be alive and give up hunting and take up knitting than having no option at all.
Grizzlies are not true hibernators like black bears. The awaken during their hibernation for a snack. But right now they are highly aggressive in garnering a substantial feast leading to a slumber.
Keep your wits about you out there. Oh yeah. Have a large blade belt knife handy just in case it becomes close quarter combat. Fellow hunting up near Prince George a few years back dispatched a grizzly that had him pinned down and was plucking his stomach muscles with it's teeth. He managed to dispatch the bear by repeatedly stabbing it in the neck. Buck 119 comes to mind.
