I spent the money on surefire before. Then we started to carrier fenix, so for half the price I bought one and I know now I will not be buying a surefire again if I can get a fenix. They are awesome!

Not sure who makes the originally but the Browning branded lights are killer, and blow some of the higher priced lights out of the water. My 130 lumen Tactical Hunter is very well made, but I don't use it a whole lot as the CR123 batteries are fairly pricey. I saw some online for quite a bit cheaper, but never did try ordering. Puts out a very nice block of greenish light. Makes a 3 or 4 D cell incandescent Maglight look sick. Smooth and bright with a nice switch. The new Brownings are even better, with higher output and more frugal battery useage. I think the AA is the way to go. Cheaper than the triple A as well. And you can always switch to lithium for more output (longer), longer shelf life and good in the cold.

Have a couple Princess Auto lights that come with a rechargeable battery and charger. The 8 Watt is very bright, but they seem to have scrimped on the switches, as they seem to get finicky. Also a pain to click through to the desired beam.

My Dorcy gets a fair bit of use, and is a good light for the money. It's a few years old and is the 200 lumen model with aluminum body and AAA batteries.

i have a slight led addiction, i buy them from ebay.
search this Ultrafire WF-501B CREE T6 this is an awsome light for $20 for batterys and charger. or $12 if you have the batteries you cant buy these batteries in normal box stores

i have bought several of these types of flashlights or simaler, you can not belive the lm claims. and have to be carfull what you buy, some of it is cheap crap.

Had my bro in law give me a Browning Chaos Tactical Hunter for Christmas. Love this thing. Wholesale Sports has em for $52.99. Would love a Surefire, but this Browning is remarkably good.

I've got a couple Petzl headlamps, and some led maglights. Cheap enough to have one handy in a few spots, but still good at lighting things up. Always mean to get a fenix, and one of these days I will part with the hundred bucks to try one out.

If it's all you can afford, they will probably work. If you can afford $50-$100 to spend on a flashlight, do it. At 2AM when you need it, it'll work. I've probably had over a dozen DX flashlights break on me.
older ones, yes, not the new ones - machined aluminum bodies, extremely high quality (Cree).

Yes, I have ones from 4+ years ago, and ones from 2 months ago. Many with CREE emitters. The bodies are the easy part to make, it's just a piece of machined plastics.
Take out the internals and compare them to a good light.

Picked up a Fenix LD41 over the weekend and i am quite happy with it. Was pretty resonable price at around $75 and I also picked up the Princton Tec 200 headlamp...both are very impressive thank you for all the input everybody. I can kind of see how collecting lights can be addictive...

The LD41 looks like quite a torch...watch where you point that thing! At 520 lumens you could start a forest fire.
Nice choice, enjoy.

Good points on the types of lights emitted, and the battery type will always make or break the deal for me. Nothing else but the double or triple A lights now. You can always get those in lithium for cold weather, longer life work too.

Bright white lite, you can't beat the price - you could have 10 of 'em around and still be a cheapskate like me.
Only thing better is my hand crank 21 LED flashlight.
I have some of the cheap multi-LED lights, many of them as company SWAG. They are ok, for a little while, but the lack of any kind of focus and the cheap construction lets them down fast. Not to mention battery life.

Had a Fenix 100 lumen single AA flashlight in my pocket for a while and it had really good light, and battery usage for the money. Switch seemed decent. Only drawback was there was no advanced circuitry for steadier light output.

Maglites used to be good, but the LEDs are nothing to write home about. Easily surpassed by just about everything now.

Update on the Dorcy: Lost it for about 6 months, and found it on another guy at work. I quickly repossessed it and found out it went through the snow blower and spent the winter outside. The aluminum body is scarred from it's ordeal, but it's still a good light!

Carrying around a Streamlight Stylus Pro now as my EDC light. The lumen output sounds very low, but I think is a little under rated and the batteries last a long time.

When size is no consequence I sometimes carry around a Coast HP14. It has 2 output powers, one at 300 lumens, and another at 50. On high it lasts about 4 hours, on low it goes 20 or something. When the batteries get low it defaults to low power to help you limp along. The quick focus is pretty cool, but I think I may have knocked mine around a little as some times it acts up. If I loosen the tail cap, it seems to reset(?) and works fine again.

I've destroyed many flashlights at work. This is the best I've found so far, very durable and drop resistant. Better than the Streamlight equivalent. I ran one over with a semi and it still worked after I hammered the barrel round so I could get the squished batteries out of it. It did die a couple months later but it's the only failure I know of out of many people using them.

It's a good, bright, general purpose light.

I can't believe the junk you guys recommend.
Good choice to the OP and the guys that suggested Fenix.
There is no better headlamp made for durability and lumen output than zebra light. Cannot believe no one has mentioned them.
Have 3 of them now. My original is over 5 yrs old and still going strong.
They also have a red led model that runs on a single AA for walking into your deer stand.
Keep it together, rob.

I absolutely love my Fenix PD35. Under $100 too. I bought some streamlight polytacs when I started dipping my toes into higher output flashlights and was very impressed by them, but after getting the PD35 I'd say they're junk.

FENIX all the way. Lots of models to choose from. The headlamp I use takes 4 AA batteries, three levels of brightness, super clean light can cast a beam 50 yards or more

Fenix LD20 or LD22 now I believe.

Amazing how bright these lights are for the size. About 6" long and 3/4" diameter. Uses 2 AA batteries which are easy to replace.

I have know 5 guys who use them after I got the first one.

I used to use an incandescent mag light and will never again...

I cant say enough good things about Fenix lights.

They have different brightness settings and on the lower setting they last for hours on end.
