Default Crows, Ravens, seagulls.....

I had a discussion with a guy about shooting those birds on a private land or crown land. I can't find anything in a regulations about seagulls but I am 100% sure that it is legal to shoot crows and Ravens.
If you guys know for sure what are the rules - please advise me. Thanks.

Probably not a good idea to be shooting Gulls of any sort. Shooting them in the head could cause major changes near your butt to things like your wallet.

I have never shot any seagulls cause I was pretty sure that this is not legal but the guy I was talking to has a way more experience in hunting than I am. That's why I had to post the question here....

Ravens can only be shot on private land NOT crown land.

Gulls are protected.

Not sure about crows and Ravens I believe the laws change when hunted on crown versus private land.

But Gulls are protected by the migratory bird convention of 1994
see link
The Glauocus, Glaucous-winged,Great Black Backed, lesser Black backed, laughing, Ivory, Franklins Gull are all named plus many more.
So unless the migratory hunt lists a season they are no go.

"Seagulls came under endangered species protection after bird populations began dropping to dangerous levels. Seagulls are migratory birds, and they nest in areas that are sometimes environmentally fragile. Seagulls are legally protected from harm in North America and parts of Europe"

man they're everywhere! we must live in the seagull stronghold of the world if they're endangered. i would expect tourists to come here just for our population of seagulls

Sea Gull is the state bird of Utah.

Here is the rest of the note

"Seagulls are grouped in with several other migratory bird species when it comes to their status as an endangered wildlife population. Like other migratory birds, gulls do their nesting in coastal regions and near lakes. Breeding grounds for migratory birds are fragile, which means that bird populations suffer the consequences when breeding areas are destroyed.
The downside of seagulls being a protected bird species is that there they are growing in numbers and becoming a nuisance in some populated areas. Gulls feed on aquatic life, carrion and leftover scraps of food wherever they find it. When the birds do not find an adequate supply of food at sea or coastal areas they often seek food in nearby towns and cities.
Because it is against the law to kill gulls, culling their ranks requires special legal permission. In order to protect the health and safety of people, some government organizations are using non-lethal and lethal solutions to reduce the gull population when needed."

A bit more info.

Quote:
All birds are protected except the following: Starlings, Crows, Pigeons, House (English) Sparrows, Magpies, Blackbirds, Common Grackles, Brown-headed Cowbirds, Ravens (hunted on private land by residents) and any other birds for which an open season has been declared by the regulations as indicated in the summary.

"Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994
This Act and its complementary Regulations ensure the conservation of migratory bird populations by regulating potentially harmful human activities. A permit must be issued for all activities affecting migratory birds, with some exceptions detailed in the Regulations."

This is why waterfowl hunting is a federal regulation and not provincial.
All migratory birds are federally protected and hunting seasons are controlled by the federal government.
In other words they paint everything with one brush to cover all migratory birds as protected and untouchable unless they say you can.

Ravens only on private land? Can't find reference to that anywhere in regs. Anyone clear that up for me?

I had a big noisy ole' crow in my sights today... I had kinda lured him in, making voice-calls to the ones I heard way off in the distance.

He landed on a tree top (60' high), about 100m away from where I just finished shooting the 22wmr (@ 100 meters).

I sat there with the crosshairs on his chest for about 2 minutes, as he ruffled his cackles and cawwed away at the other crows in the area.

Finally, I put the gun down & stood up. Yelled "hey !" at him then clapped my hands. He lifted off the tall pine, never to be seen again.

His lucky day !
