Default When do you hang up your gear and call it a season?

Hey y'all, just wondering when you call it a year and put your gear up in the proverbial attic? What is the deciding factor that leads to your decision (as difficult as I'm sure it is!)

Most of the lakes I fish close around mar 15, so that's when the ice gear goes in hiding...then try to find rivers that are open....

When hunting season starts! There as also that horrible period in the spring where all I can do is try to get enough projects finished up so that I have lots of spare time when the season opens.

this season was only a week and a half off the open water season for me, barely had time to sharpen the auger!

Anything keep you from going on the ice once the weather starts to warm up? What do you consider "unsafe conditions" as the season begins to wind down?

I have been out on the spongy ice on the last day of the season on a lake and couldn't stand in one spot for more then a couple minutes. The water was seeping up through the ice and you could feel it sinking under your feet.

I haven't pushed my limit since then and don't plan on it anymore.

me personally, i put my ice fishing gear away once the ice is about 6"
the lakes are pretty quiet for weeks before then... because people don't wanna "walk" out on the ice. i enjoy it lol

I am not sure why anybody would call it quits for any period of time unless they hate ice fishing. If you enjoy fishing year round then there is no reason to hang up your gear. Alberta has great fishing opportunities all year.

March 31 is the end of the season for me. Next season starts whenever I make it around to the store to get the new license.

for me i called it quits a while ago believe it or not, ussually by this time into the ice fishing season i have about 30 or 40 trips under my belt and unfortunately for this year at this point i have only 1 ice fishing trip done so for me its kind of a lousy year because of lack of work and funds and when a day off does come around i am so exhausted to hit the ice. if i am lucky i will get in a half dozen before ice off. looking forward to open water already.

It's going to be early at this rate, one lake ive been doing well on this winter has a lot of open water as of this afternoon, access at another one is done unless we get another cold snap as well. Warm, windy, and sunny means rotten ice quickly..

I would love to have my boat out on open water before the walleye season closes down here.

Bring on the warm, sunny, windy days and rot that ice fast.

I hang it up when the open water from shore to the ice is too deep for my waiters. I usually bring a life jacket!

I am getting an inflatable if a next few days and hope my season will x2 longer now . I would still fish open water last 3 years here, but I felt like I was really limited in options w/o a boat

Never. There is no off season if you are motivated enough.
