Default Herters Ammo

Did some testing

Naturally, I used 30-06. Two different rifles. A Tikka T3 and a Sako A7

100 yd groups were 1/4" for two shots with the Tikka.

1/2" was the best I could do with my Sako

200yds. Just under 1" for the Sako. About an inch for the Tikka

300 yds. Tikka was solid 3" all day long

Me and my Sako sucked.

Took middle son out on a bear hunt. He was using Herters 180g soft point Herters ammo in 30-06. We shot a 6'6 black bear at 45 yds. Shot front on, broke the breastbone and lodged in its rear ham. Stone dead.

We retrieved the bullet. Pretty decent mushroom. Its sitting in bleach and water and Im gonna weigh it

Over all, pretty good for $22.99 a box

I did pound some 300 win mag Herters but my Parker Hale is open sight but i was "minute of bear heart" anyhow. It grouped well enough for my iron sights. About 2" was my best with an average of maybe 2.5"......$29.99 a box

My youngest tried the 30-30 Herters in his Marlin but he was shooting his lever like he was in Viet Nam so id hardly comment on his groups.......

Default Herters

Have any inside info on who makes it?
The price point is great for any reasonable performance, IMO.

At least some of it is now being made by Winchester, it has previously been made by several companies, including S&B.

I don't care if its manufactured in Siberia. Having cup and core deer ammo that is the same price as brass itself is a damn good thing.

Too funny, ahh to be young again.

Have never shot any Herters ammo, but I scrounged up a bunch of their old brass in 6.5x55 from someone years ago, and it shoots tiny groups in my Tikka.

I used some on my TAC A1 6.5CM , I'd bought it just for something to use to get the gun sighted and set some velocity baseline expectations for it. It ran in the 2740 range, box said 2820 on the 129gr.
Also checked Fed Premium w/130 Berger, ran 2749, box said 2875, Browning 130 Sierra ran 2900, the Hornady 140 ran 2591 avg, 147 Hornady ran 2659 avg.. Gun has a 24" bbl.
Accuracy on the Herter's was reasonable, 1MOA, about as expected, had some horizontal spread as it was blowing pretty good there, 4 out of 5 were @ .75moa. Berger's worked better, 5/8moa, but the ES/SD sucked on them all, except the Hornady 140 Match load, 8.7 SD, rest were over the 20 mark, 147 Hornady Match ELDM ran 30.1 SD.. I didn't bother with shooting groups with the others, just shot speed, next time.
I was reasonably impressed with the Herter's for the price. If I was using the gun for hunting, I'd consider it.

I wonder how dirty a barrel would be after target shooting.

I like it in my 30-30 henry, its what I buy when I need new brass. In my .243 it wasn't shooting very well compared to federal non-typical.
For the price I think it is well worth money. Its the only way I will be getting any new once fired brass from now on

Once fired 30-30 brass should be on heck of a lot cheaper than boxes of 20 rounds of factory ammo...?

Killed 3 deer with .30 cal 180g Herters this week

Bullet went thru at ranges between 220yds and 405 yds

No deer made it more than 25 yds

It costs me about $16 per 20 to reload not including brass for the 3030. I think it's worth it to get brass for .25$ a piece. I'm new to reloading so I don't think I have the best places to shop yet.

Huntin ;
Do 30 cal bullets normally go through deer at those ranges of similar loads? Or is the Herterz preforming better than most other ammo for you?

Rarely do I ever recover a bullet. My reloads go thru and thru. The Herters ammo did the same.

The Herters ammo performed well, both in grouping and obviously penetration. The bullet plowed thru and Stevie Wonder could have followed the short blood trail.

For $23 a box, Im wondering why I reload

That can be said for a number of different cartridge's, check out Weatherby's 257 WM brass, $55 / 20 while Weatherby select ammo is $59 / 20 loaded same for 300 Weatherby and many more I suspect.

In fact not long ago I bought Hornady precision hunter ammo loaded with 110 ELDX bullets for my 257 WM for under $50 a box tax in, if you need brass to reload it's far cheaper to buy loaded ammo and farm the brass.

What brass are they using?

I had a similar experience to waldedw. I couldn't find brass for 6.5CM a while back. But it was $65/50. I bought 50 loaded rounds of Hornady American Gunner, which turned out tk be some pretty good shooting stuff, for $80. I can reload that cheaper for sure, but if I need brass, thats a great way of getting it and saving time.

I agree, bought some Weatherby Select ammo with 110 grain bullets. Does 3600 fps, and puts three under a 1/2' every time. Was $48 a box. Brass costs more and this stuff shoots as good as my hand loads. For the amount I shoot the gun I could easily just use factory ammo.

Nosler 300wsm brass is $115 for 25

Nosler 300 wsm 180g accubonds are $92/box loaded from factory

Makes no sense
