Default Help needed to take kids ice fishing

Hi everyone:

I teach a CTF Wildlife course to junior high students. We've been fly-fishing, and gone on day trips to Jasper to observe wildlife.

This January, I'd like to take my students ice fishing at a local lake near Edmonton. Ideally, it would be nice to fish for species like lake whitefish or perch (sometimes) or rainbows in shallow enough water where they could sight fish, as I think that would be the most exciting.

Keeping the odd lake whitefish or perch would be nice too, but it's not a total deal-breaker (I am thinking C&R Wabamun, just for the walleye bite).

Anyways, I would need volunteers to help drill extra holes, some extra ice fishing equipment, etc.

Be great if anyone is available. The trip would likely be on a Friday, mid to late January. Every extra pair of hands (and ice augers) helps!

Cheers. Reply back on this thread or feel free to pm me. Again, this would be the Edmonton area.

Cheers,
Smitty

if youre taking kids fishing and you want something productive i would maybe just go trout fishing nearby, chickakoo for trout or wabamun for walleye and pike ect.

I dont think you're gonna have much luck for perch unless you're ready to catching finger length perch.

I’ve got a gas auger that’s my backup that you are welcome to use if you like.

Close to Edmonton, easy sight fishing, keep whitefish, C&R walleye, easy access, nearby outhouse facilities... sounds like a Pigeon lake or Sylvan lake event.

Mission beach or Sundance beaches along the north shore at Pigeon was always fished for whites. Fairly light sandy bottom 4 to 8 feet deep. Used to be 50 to 200 ice anglers in the area any given day 40 years ago. I don't see many fishermen there now a days but I'm sure the whitefish still cruise there.

At Sylvan lake straight out in front of the old water slide area in town in 6 to 12 feet was good for whites. Go deeper for the perch, if they are still around. Good chance of perch in deeper water. Not sure how big anymore. The record perch came out of Sylvan in the 1960's. It was 2 lb & so many ounces.

I unfortunately have no gear suitable for helping.
