Default Modern Muzzleloaders

Sorry for another what gun thread but....
Looking to get into one.
Bolt vs break action?
Cva, Knight, Traditions, Thompson/Center?
Not a fan of package centerfires but...
If your only shooting 150 yds do you really need a $800 scope or a scope at all?

depends
I like the break action personally
because if a cap sticks its easier to remove a stuck primer cap,
as for a scope vrs open sights
how good are your eyes???
how much open sight shooting have you done??
eg 22 open sights in a gopher patch
the scope thing is a very personal thing that's way

Eyes have 50yrs on em but lots of open sight shooting.
How common is a stuck primer cap?
Looking at the CVA accura/ optima.

Default don't need an expensive scope

The Nikon Inline XR 3-9x40 Matte w/ BDC 300 in under $300 (best value for the money IMO). Looks and works great on my Traditions Vortek UltraLight. Only issue was the need for extra high scope mounts due to the hammer clearance. Now they have the Vortek StrikerFire without external hammer that would alleviate this issue.

Default Thompson Center

I'm on my second Encore. First was a stainless standard model then I went with and still hunt with the Endevour model. Use the Nikon Omega on both. No need for primer jackets (Knight) either.

Savage 10ML II - accurate for up to 300 yrds. Last deer I shot with it, lifted and rolled over dead at 272 yrds, hole punched thru both lungs and sides. It's an amazing muzzle loader that's clean, powerful and fun to shoot. Best of all, it's smokeless.

Does Savage still make them? No offence, but I thought those guns had a rep for blowing up.

My opinion....... human error, obstruction in the barrel, or from pushing the envelope from manufacturers recommendations for loads (increasing recommended loads, using powders not recommended, or modifying sabots or other wads not recommended and tested by Savage) would be the main causes.

No different from any other rifle............

I would agree, that pilot error was the most likely cause of the incidents, but I would also imagine that they had an effect on sales all the same.

There has only been a couple of cases that I'm aware of that they have blown up; however in each case it has been by error of the shooter double charging or overloading.

Toby Bridges was initially all for the sale of the Savage 10ML II until he was fired by Savage for unethical practices in both experimenting with loads and his sales approach. He then threatened Henry Ball the creator of the Savage with a letter that if he was not going to be part of the sales of the Savage 10ML II, he would then bring the sales of the 10ML II to an end. Shortly after Bridges was fired, he blew up a Savage 10ML II. A close up look of the Savage that Bridges blew up reveals the likely hood of a double charge, although Bridges denies this.

Article to read on this:

http://randywakeman.com/HowToBlowUpASavage10ML.htm

AO also has more info:

http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showt...ge+10ML&page=2

They stopped making stainless steel models as Savage didn't feel it was catching on, and there was not enough marginal profit. Savage then dedicated their material for stainless steel to their better selling rifles. However, they continued to produce the Savage 10ML II, through special order, as more hunters learned about them. I saw two blued Savage 10ML II at Cabela's in Saskatoon a couple of months ago. Both were smokeless, one in camo and the other one with a black synthetic stock.

Do a search on the Web and it will reveal the lies behind the myth that these muzzle loaders blowing up. They are safe and there are likely thousands of them out there. The blow ups are user error and can be done with any muzzle loader. So if you see one, grab it while you can because they are a safe and awesome muzzle loader with unbelievable reach.
