$2500 limit for a wood splitter. Let's here your choices
Hey everyone. Looking at killing some time trying to sell firewood so looking for an efficient fast wood splitter that can handle work. Most likely looking at a 4 or 6 blade splitter on it. Splitting mostly birch and spruce some popular and not afraid to do the regular maintenance. Let's hear the brands and pros and cons of your gas splitters.
Thanks for your time and input, I'll be doing more research tonight.

I have a 20-22 ton or so champion, I haven't been able to stop it yet. It I imagine I could with a big wet poplar stump. If you are getting multiple wedges I would get into the 30 ton range for sure. That said, I spent last week splitting a couple loads of logs at a friends place, he has a old square baler converted into a splitter, and for production work, the speed is amazing. Taking all that into account, unless the wood is free and within mile from you, I would think it would be a financial loss. Good luck all the same.

Fast
My aunt had one on the farm. Helped them out clearing and splitting for manus days.
I don't remember the make it was tough and reliable.
It was also painfully slow. Waiting for the ram to return was painful. If it had an auto return switch to take the ram back to be ready for the next split that would have helped. So would a faster return stroke.
Spent too mwuch time holding the lever waiting for the ram to reset.
See if those features can be had to help you out.
I did not look The the Princess Auto splitters the other day, but as mentioned the are on sale.

Without a doubt get a double action one.
Then you are not waiting for it to reset.
There really isn't much to these things.
Engines can be replaced pretty easy IF something should happen to one.
Consider a used for 800-1500 and spend the rest on a vacation.
Or hunting gear

I've got a 20 ton Wallenstein that I really like. I don't use multiple blades but cycle time is fast and it returns without holding the handle. I really like the height of the deck because it is taller than average it's a 520T I believe.

Before I bought I looked at every splitter out there and read a lot on some logging forums from the states. I ended up buying they Wallenstien wx620t.
Here are the reasons I went for this quality unit:
1. Local parts and service sold by Power Equimpent in Edmonton
2. Canadian made
3. Honda GX motor, best honda motor
4. Auto return
5. Deck hieght is 9" taller then other units which puts an average person in a comfortable position. If they are low, you are always bent over and your back will kill you.
6. Very good quality pump and ram
7. Quality steel and thickness. Welds will not break
Wallenstien is made by the same company that make the ones for Home Depot and Costco. They are decent units, but I was able to talk to the rep that sells both. He told me that Home Depot and Costco had set a max sell price and they had to meet it. They then had to put on a cheaper motor, pump, ram, and lighter metal. These units have a pump good for about 100 hrs. For warranty you have to send them back to the factory in southern Ontario on your dime.
On the forums I read there Princess Auot units are the next best, but they are now made off shore and the quality is not as good as when they where built in the USA.
If you buy a quality unit, it will last and always be worth some money. The cheap ones are disposable and you will be fixing.
The Ariens unit is also an excellent unit. The Lawnmower Hospital sells them in Edmonton.
Good luck!
