Default Once in a lifetime events

The comet thread got me thinking, how many BIG once in a lifetime things have you seen personally?

Not things like rode a bike, ate a rock, everything you did you had to do a first time.

I can think of:
Haley's and Hale Bopp comets,
The new Milennium,
The Lone Rock Meteor,
The 2011 Tsunami, we were waaay too close for comfort there

With the stuff that usually flies on this forum your question opens up way too many responses. That's all I was inferring.

Thumbs up

I still remember Hale Bopp (a.k.a. The Great Comet of 1997) ^, like it was yesterday.

Can't wait for Ison in November ... it could be even bigger!

Sputnik scared the hell out of us, and then the first landing on the moon made everything all right again.

1997 Easter break. I was living on the coast and decided to take my two youngest, boy and a girl to visit my brother who was living south of cereal.
It was very early morning as we drove across the prairie and the kids were sleeping.

As we headed north Halebopp was streaking across the sky, the moon was eclipsing and the northern lights provided a back drop for the show.

I stopped, shut the lights off and woke the kids.8 and 10 years old.
It was totally amazing.

They don't remember it.

Sputnik may have scared us, but I think Muttnik really scared the dog.

Working at the Edmonton international airport for 911 was a pretty interesting experience. Typical of rampies I wore a reflective vest adorned with the badges that I'd managed to tear off expencive luggage and a pair of earmuffs that I'd stollen from the Air Canada bagage room ( AC gives their guys hearing protection, Hudson General didnt). At the end of about a 3 straight day gongshow, sleeping when I could on a couch in the locker room, I took my vest and earmuffs, as well as a 911 special addition of the Sun that ran on the same day and tucked them away in a chest where they remain to this day.

To me there is alot of personal meaning in that keepsake. Shortly after that I quit the airport to get a real job, quit playing in bands, quit riding BMX, dumped my first real girlfriend, and gave up a number of other highschool era activities I'd been hanging on to. In short I grew up, I know 911 was a terrible event but I feel an awfull lot of nostalgia when I dig that stuff out.
